We can get back on track. I find this time period fascinating as well, although I haven't collected any coins from it. I think it'll be my next reading project. Evidently the Ostrogoths were quite resolute about preserving Roman culture...

There's great stuff about the period on the internet and in books. Currently I'm reading "The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians" by Peter Heather and its a fascinating read so far :) Rented it from my local library.

Your choices in this collecting specialty seem very limited and pricey, unless I don't know where to look. I don't envy you.

Both are very true for this series, although deals can still be had sometimes. Also, for this time period there are other, cheaper coins to collect such as Vandal and Byzantine (but true Vandal pieces still being hard to find). My strategy for obtaining these is to look in as many places as possible, and not to spend too much on everything else (I'm more of a quality over quantity guy), so hopefully when one appears, I will (hopefully) have enough cash for it.

oh man, that's a great one! i would have just thought the xx was a mint mark and not the type of coin, since the byzantines prominently display their xx (i suppose during this period all the byzantine half follis coins would have the K), haven't seen anything just like that before.

XX is Latin for 20 (Ostrogoths were in Latin-speaking Western Europe ) and K is 20 in Greek (which was mainly spoken in the Byzantine Empire). On my Ostrogothic 40 nummi follis with the same design as my new coin, it has XL above (Latin numerals for 40, while the Byzantine folles had the Greek numeral M for 40).

Yeah, on some coins the Byzantines used the Latin numerals, since at this time Latin was the official language of government (as opposed to the Greek that a good portion of the population spoke). Now that I think about it, it seems XL and XXXX were interchangeable. Cool coin btw chrsmat, thanks for sharing!
