This neat denarius surprisingly arrived today! Domitian AR Denarius, 3.05g Rome mint, 83 AD Obv: IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: TR POT II COS VIIII DES X P P; Minerva stg. l., with thunderbolt and spear; shield at her side (M3) RIC 167 (R). BMC 43. RSC 604. BNC 40. Ex AMCC Auction 2, 9 November 2019, lot 147. In 82 Domitian reformed the coinage by raising the weight of the gold, refining the silver, and improving the over all quality. 83 was also a landmark year for his coinage - it was the first year that the all four standard Minerva types were struck together, serving as a blueprint for the remainder of the reign for the precious metal issues. This 'type 3' Minerva denarius is from that rare first Minerva issue. Historical note: The Battle of Mons Graupius was most likely fought in the autumn of 83. Formerly the Andrew Short Collection. Thanks @Orfew and @Severus Alexander!
