Well as all of you know, the mint decided not to produce any proof or (W) unc ASEs last year. In doing so, there was one set in particular that was not produced and that was the Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set. I was just looking at my 2007 and 2008 sets tonight and was thinking what a shame of a missed opportunity.

The first thing that came to mind was the word "ANNUAL" which is in the title of the product. Well obviously, you can't call it annual anymore. Kinda tough to call something annual when you start skipping years here and there...don't you agree?

Also, didn't mint make a gazillion bullion ASEs last year??? Ok, maybe not a gazillion, but they did sell nearly 29 million of these things last year. I would have still bought the set if they just substituted the W ASE for the bullion one. Heck, I don't think anyone would have noticed. The bullion ASE is still considered Uncirculated in the purest of terms anyway.

Lastly, the mint could have at least still made the set, but chose to keep out the ASE. Now if the mint decides to make this set next year, we are missing a year. I don't care about the ASE, but we will be missing the 4 prez dollars and the new sac.

Either you collect the set or you don't. But now the series is dead. Even if the mint picks up next year, I will not continue the series because it won't be complete. And not because I don't have the ASE for 2009, but I don't have the other 5 coins in set either. Maybe it wasn't a big seller and the mint felt this would be a good time to ax the set. Who knows.

This is one set that I definitely felt had options to continue and the mint passed up on those. The mint has used bullion ASEs in sets before, they could have surely done it again.
