FFIVN and I stopped by the Annapolis show today to say hi to our local, friendly, ancient dealer. He had some interesting things for us and we want to share them with you all. First Up: Severus Alexander AE20 Provincia Arabia, Bostra Obv: IMP CAES M AVR SEV ALEXANDER AVG, laureate bust right Rev: COLONIA BOSTRA, draped bust of Zeus-Ammon right wearing solar disk Next up: Labeled As: Gallienus AE22 Troas, Alexandria Troas Obv: Radiate Bust, right Rev: COL I VL TRO, Nike advancing left, holding wreath and palm I can't find an example of this one anywhere... Next Up: Labeled as: Philip I AE28 Thrace, Bizya Obv: Laureate bust, right Rev: Asclepius standing facing, head left, right hand rests on serpent staff I couldn't find an example of this anywhere. Last but not least: Azes II AR Drachm, BC - 5 AD Obv: BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEON MEΓAΛOY AZOY, king on horseback right, raising right hand Rev: Kharosthi legend, Zeus Nikephoros standing left, holding sceptre and wreath-bearing Nike; KP monogram to left.
We also were given 3 misc coins to try and identify: First: Byzantine, Anonymous Follis. I'm not sure I will be able to further ID this one, as most of the detail on Christ is worn off. Second: A Severus Alexander which looks to have been carved down to maybe fit into a ring or some other piece of jewelry. The reverse looks to maybe be Genius. Third: No idea on this one at all. He wasn't sure and I am not either. Looks to be medieval but it will be tough to ID. I'm not even sure what the proper orientation is lol.
Nope we didn't see them. He was bouncing all over from table to table today. Spent most of our time with the world stuff.
Looks like it was another interesting day for the Furry family! Here's another example of your Bizya Philip I, from CNG's archives: THRACE, Bizya. Philip I. AD 244-249. Æ (31mm, 15.77 g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Asclepius standing facing, head left, leaning on serpent-entwined staff. Jurukova, Bizye 97; Varbanov 1514. Good VF, brown surfaces.
I stopped by the Marietta, GA coin show today. Haven’t had time to attribute everything but landed a scarce Probus, double denarius Gordian III, a Dioscuri reverse, finally a bald headed Carus and 2 more.
Cool assortment @furryfrog02 and @Johnnie Black ! I'm getting a 17th century Spanish vibe from you unkown coin 3 FF.
I'm thinking it is from Basil II/Constantine VIII and looks a bit like one of these: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/byz/basil_II/sb1813.3.jpg http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/byz/basil_II/sb1813.6.jpg
While there is nothing wrong with the use of current names attribution, I would prefer to slip the "Anonymous A2" ID as well so when someone decides to revise the attributions, boh systems are covered. Of course we are currently in the middle of a dispute over whether there are A3 coins or if all of them are to be called A2 as well so perhaps I lied when I said it was simple.
