This Philip I antoninianus with a stag on the reverse is a new acquisition. It's one of the coins issued for the games held in 248 AD commemorating the 1,000th anniversary of the traditional founding of Rome:

Philip I AR Antoninianus, 248 AD, Rome Mint, 5th Officina. Obv. Radiate, draped, & cuirassed bust right, IMP PHILIPPVS AVG/ Rev. Stag standing right, SAECVLARES AVGG, V in exergue. RIC IV-3 19, RSC IV 182, Sear RCV III 8958. 4.32 g. (Games commemorating 1,000th anniversary of founding of Rome.)

    Philip I stag reverse Antoninien 248 Rome (23,5mm, 4,32g, 1h) AU_AU _ MA-Shops. jpg image.jpg

And here's another example I've had for a while:

Philip I AR Antoninianus, 248 AD, Rome Mint, 1st Officina. Obv. Radiate, draped, & cuirassed bust right, IMP PHILIPPVS AVG/ Rev. Lion walking right, SAECVLARES AVGG, I in exergue. RIC IV-3 12, RSC IV 173. 23 mm., 3.41 g. (Games commemorating 1,000th anniversary of founding of Rome.)

Philip I Antoninianus (Lion Reverse) jpg version.jpg

Finally, another Philip I antoninianus I have with an elephant reverse, that's not part of the SAECVLARES AVGG series:

Philip I AR Antoninianus, 244-249 AD. Obv. Radiate, draped, & cuirassed bust right, IMP PHILIPPVS AVG/ Rev. Elephant walking left, bearing driver holding goad, AETERNITAS AVGG. RIC IV-3 58, RSC IV 17. 23 mm., 4.2 g.

Philip I Antoninianus (Elephant Obverse) jpg version.jpg
    Philip I Antoninianus (Elephant) - reverse 2.jpg

    (Sellers' images throughout)

Please post any animal reverses you may have of Philip I or his family (given that there were some issued for Otacilia Severa and, I believe, Philip II) -- whether or not they have any connection to the 1,000th anniversary games.

The Saeculares series of six officina numbered coins included four for Philip I and one each for Phlip II and Otacilia Severa.

    IIII Otacilia hippo

    Philip II moose
    ro1190bb0110.jpg

The series also came as sestertii but these were not officina numbered. I only have the wolf.
    ro1050bb1190.jpg

Another animal was the elephant not from the series. It came from both Rome ro1010bb0576.jpg

    and the Eastern mint (Antioch?).
    ro0800bb0950.jpg

Since CT allows 10 images on a post, I'll toss in the PI and II on horseback type from the other officina numbered series which used Greek numerals (here E=5). The other types were not animals.

A great set! Perhaps someday I'll be able to complete mine, although a lot of the ones I see for sale don't look that great. (The worst of them is still better than most of the Gallienus "zoo" coins, though.) I think the hippo you posted is my favorite -- that's the best one I've seen!

I believe the deer or stag is # V, not IV.

What we call a moose, don't they call an elk in Europe? I don't think they use the word moose there.

How can you tell which elephant comes from the Rome mint and which from the East? Judging by the difference between your two elephants, I think that perhaps mine also comes from the Rome mint, because I think mine looks more like that one: in the one from the Eastern mint (as with most of the ones I've seen), the rider's second crop or goad is raised rather than lying flat (or non-existent; it's hard to tell).

Corrected, thanks. The hippo comes in two versions which caused me to keep two of these coins.

It seems that the authorities can't agree on whether No. III is supposed to be a goat or an elk/moose. The small horns and beard on several suggest the former. Do moose have beards?

I don't collect the series, but couldn't resist getting myself an Otacilia hippo. It's not as cute as Doug's, though.
