Yes but if the civil had taken place during the gold rush, many of the people that would have gone west to mine would have stayed in the east and fought.

People today seem to be only aware of what has happened within their own experiences. People don't even recall the huge tax increases under Reagan or the GOP push on hand gun laws after Brady was shot. And that was recent. Things that happened over 60 years ago have no relevence today for most people. They could care less. In a decade WWII will be forgotten, and in two so will Korean war and Vietnam bite the dust. IMHO

I hope you're wrong. Some people like to remain ignorant of history because they're lazy, others because they're too self-involved to care. Fortunatelly, those aren't generally the people who are making the important decisions that effect the present and the future.

It will not be forgotten. At least not by me anyways. We studied it today in my college World Civ. Class (world history). It was a very important time in history. One of my favorites too (to study, not favorite as to what was going on, not a supporter of war). I think that over time people may become less knowledgeable, but it will never be forgotten. Also, how much do you hear about 9/11 anymore? It has virtually been forgotten. It barely even got mentioned in the news this year. It it well within most people's realm of experience. Next year will be 10 years and after that it will begin to fade from memory. As for Korea and Vietnam, I can't recall ever really studying those in school although I really wish I knew more about them. Pretty much all I can say was we lost in Vietnam and both were fought to try and preserve Democracy near by then communist China.

Also, I have my steel pennies and silver nickels to remind me all the time :)

Some might be lazy or self involved, but I would blame the way History is taught in US schools more. When I talk to kids about history, they love it. They say its interesting and engaging, completely unlike their classes. I would say "History" classes in K-12 in this country discourages more interest in History than it ever encourages.

P.S. If you think History literacy is poor in this country, try geography. Over 20% of Florida graduating college seniors could not locate the US on a world map, over 30% could not locate Florida!

Well there were minor battles between the pro Union Northern Californians and the secessionist southern California. There was also at least one battle that took place between Union Troops and "Confederates" in Arizona Territory which had seceded from the New Mexico Territory and had declared for the Confederacy. Ther were also a couple of attempts at Naval attacks but they were stymied before they ever had a chance to occur.

During the Civil War, the US contracted with the Russian
Pacific fleet to provide security for the San Francisco ports
to prevent Confederate raiders from pirating gold and silver
shipments which were financing the Union cause.

The US-Russia contacts later resulted in the purchase of Alaska.

    :)

Guys - in the beginning this thread had something to do with coins, but no longer. If you wish to continue to discuss history then take it to the GD forum.
