And I thought this was a forum to talk about coins. Silly me.

I know the person you are referring to. The links he posts in his opening post to his threads are required by the forum rules as the information he posts is not his but that of another source which may be copyrighted material.

People can choose not to read his threads just as easily as they choose to read them.

Just an FYI Tim, but you have toned down the number of threads you start, but you need to work on doing more research into the information you do post, as opposed to taking someone's word on a subject as being accurate. Need I remind of the lesson I, and others, doled out to you about Diabetes?

In response to the original poster: Yes, I agree. I used to frerquent Coin Chat frequently just because I will find several threads relating to my own collecting interest there, but recently the number of quality threads I find interesting or pertinent (sp?) to my collecting goals/knowledge have dwindled significantly; thus, I don't go to that forum as often. As far as posting, again I agree. There have been a time or two where I see threads, wish to keep up on it without having to respond to subscribe to the thread, and then ten minutes later find it on page 3 or 4 as the load of posts by one or two individuals floods the forum. Definately makes me less likely to participate, and in my opinion, a much less interactive or informative forum as it is being monopolized by postings of one or two individuals.

I agree 100%. And, unfortunately, the "ignore" button doesn't take care of the problem. I still have to see the topics listed in the different rooms. I still wish there were a way to truly ignore a poster. That is, not have to see any posts they start and not even have to see a place holder for their replies.

I'm sure no one can guess as to who is the biggest offender -- afterall, only 16 of the currently listed "Coin Chat" topics were started by said person. :(

Ok, I'm still fairly new to CT but I have to agree to some extent with a dislike of seeing 20 new threads started in a very short period of time that are mostly links to other sites. I do like a fair number of the articles that the links lead to but I think alot of them could have been combined into 1 or 2 posts rather then a new thread for each.

On the other hand the treatment of "new members" I have experenced for myself and almost caused me to leave in my 1st few days here. I didn't because haveing far more experence in other forums I know there is always 1-2 purests/racists/bigots/self appointed experts etc etc etc on every forum and the best way to deal with them is simply ignore them.

I will say one of the things kept me coming back were those funny posts/threads. Just because some of them are total flights of fancy (ie silver to $80 due to vamp appocilipse) does not mean that they wasted space on the forum. They are coin related if not serious and the last time i checked there was no ban on humor in the forums.

I have watched dozens of chat groups colapse and die off because a few of the members decided that the scope of the forum needed to be narrowed or restricted to a specific topic set, using posts and threads much like this one to get the mod's to conform to their views of what should be allowed. Not once have i ever seen this "help" a forum in almost every case in the end it causes a die off of present members and a decline in new membership. Some of you I'm sure will ask "what the heck does a weasel know about forums?" All I will say on that is I am Mr Weasel of the Unwashed Village aka mrweaseluv. We were in essence an anti-hacking/flaming/spamming group and worked with many many forums and IRLs in the early days of the internet. What I'm telling you is from experence not opinion and if asked for my opinion by the mods it would be to delete this entire thread as it is exactly the type that can tear a forum in two.

I should remind everyone that currently, there is no forum rule that restricts the number of threads any one member can start in any given day, or in any time frame between each thread, at least none that I've seen, and as thorough as Doug is, I'm sure he would have one posted in the rules if there were one.

I've looked at Ruben's thread list, and with the exception of the thread with the upside down title, and smelling a scam on eBay, the rest are coin related and were posted, I'm sure, to provide us with information from sources many of us might not be aware of.

His threads with the links in the opening post are conforming to the forum rules which require everyone to link the source of information they post which is not their original thought and which may be copyrighted material.

As stated, people can easily not open any of his threads just as easily as they can choose to not open them.

BTW, this is the Coin Chat forum, and I ask, what does this ranting thread have to do with coins?

Perhaps this should be moved to the General Discussion section, or even closed by the mods as this has certainly been discussed once before, and I believe that thread had to be closed because people couldn't keep it civil.

There is no rule that restricts the number of posts any member here can start.

If you've a mind to, you can start 16 threads a day if you wish.

As a compromise, perhaps Ruben could post one post per day with a bunch of links with the title "Numismatic News of the Day", instead of multiple posts per day.

I've seen this work well on other forums that I follow, and I think it could work here too.

    Just a thought.....Mike

A numismatic news forum subdivision would be another option. I enjoy reading many of the news items posted but can see how the volume of threads can bother some by bumping other topics off the first coin chat page.

If this is done, the threads should be hidden from the "Recent threads" sidebar as the CRH threads are.

Relax guys. There's an easy way to keep abreast of things despite the fact that excessive posts by a few members sometimes push threads off the first page of the sub-forum listing, supposedly making it difficult to keep up with things.

At the top of every page is a button for "What's New". When you click on that, you get a listing of all threads in every sub-forum (except General Discussion) having posts you haven't read. The information in that listing includes the time of day when the most recent post was made.

This forum also has the wonderful features of allowing you to preview a thread by hovering your cursor over the title; marking threads you have contributed to with a small arrow in the thread icon; and providing a link in each thread title to the first unread post.

Using those features I have no problem picking and choosing which threads - in any forum - I want to read, and then going directly to the posts I haven't yet read. (That last feature is invaluable when you want to see the updates in those long-running threads with literally thousands of posts.)

By advancing through the pages of listings until I reach one with a last post that is earlier than the time of my last visit to CT, I don't miss much of anything I want to read, and I don't have to deal with the ones that don't interest me. I also catch interesting threads in the "wrong" sub-forums.

I considered it. But if there is one thing that I have always tried to do it is to allow anybody and everybody to speak their mind freely (within the rules), especially when it has to do with how this forum is run, or when their comments are critical of how this forum is run.

Not everybody likes that, but I believe in transparency and openness. So I left it here in an area that is visited by far more members than the GD section is.

That is an excellent idea. And Ruben, I encourage you to follow that suggestion.

The problem is not really what the poster does, it's how they do it.

I don't see anything wrong with posting a few links from time to time, but posting 10 in rapid succession buries the "Recent Threads" list down quite a bit.

I think what the Mod is highly recommending is Ruben only post one thread with all the links contained therein instead of 10 separate threads.

I sometimes think that Ruben's prime objective is to have only his threads listed under the "New Threads" and "Recent Threads" columns.:D

I think he just wants to have a higher post count that Doug :thumb:
