My favourite seller had this baby in his stable, so after receiving a wee bit of a discount, I decided to stroke-off another Roman Ruler from my want-list!!

Yah, I admit that the flan may be a bit tight, but the great natural patina colors, combined with a pretty sweet reverse made me squeeze the ol' trigger (*click*)

Yup, it's another nice big sestertius ... I hope you like it as much as I like 'er!!

    Volusian AE Sestertius
    Date: 252 AD
    Diameter: 27.3 mm
    Weight: 13.7 grams
Obverse: IMP CAE C VIB VOLVSIANO AVG - Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Volusian
Reverse: IVNONI MARTIALI - Juno, holding patera and scepter, seated in domed distyle temple
    References: RIC 253a

I have to agree. That temple is very well detailed indeed. I want to get myself some sestertii from this era at some point. I can only hope that they are as nice as this.

    Thanks for the coin-compliments ...

Yah, I agree that the reverse rocks ... but it is fairly difficult for me to see Juno holding a patera and scepter (I guess I'll have to take their word for it?)

I agree about hard to see details and yours is better than my rough coin. I suspect the guys who wrote the catalogs had MS70 specimens that made it easy to see.

Looking past the slightly rough surfaces that is a wonderful looking coin Doug. Nearly fully round rather then the odd, somewhat squat flans that dominate this period. A loverly, delicate portrait and a very detailed temple. What's not to like.

Thanks comrades ... yup, I can hardly wait to get this lil' darling in-hand!!

=> wow, that was a lambasting of a Super-Bowl, eh? (Seattle looked very, very good) ... my annual stevex6 Super-Bowl party was a total success (sadly, now the clean-up process must commence ... *hic*)

Curious? => hey Doug, is your gorgeous example an AR antoninianus, or an AE Sestertius?

Sestertius. See the SC in the reverse field? I bought that coin because of the full flan and legends despite the roughness. I doubt I would do it again. Want to trade for the Amisos Medusa from G&N Pecunem?
