My name is Roger. I am fairly new to collecting coins having recently picked it up 2 years ago (why do I feel like I'm at a support group?? All good, I probably need one) This is my favourite ancient coin so far: Roman Republic - Denarius 122 B.C Material: Silver Weight: 3.90 g Diameter: 20.18 mm Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right; X below chin, RVF behind Reverse: The Dioscuri riding right. Q MINV below, ROMA in exergue (see pic below) To me it just screams classic Roman. Everything about this design is perfect ;) My hobby started when I noticed that increasingly there was a wider and wider variety of standard coins circulating here in Australia (including 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins). So I started collecting them. Once I finished those coins (or had accumulated 90% + on capturing them as they cycled through circulation), I started to look elsewhere. I popped my cherry when I purchased a British Gold Sovereign. A lovely coin from 1912. But it wasn’t until I went to the shipwreck museum in Perth, Western Australia (which had shipwreck coins from the Batavia and others), that the coin collecting bug really bit me. In a large part due to my Dutch heritage, after seeing the shipwreck Rijksdaalders and Leeuwendaalders, I started collecting Age of Sail Dutch coins in earnest. I started with 2 Stuiver silver coins, along with an almost unrecognisable Leeuwendaalder, and things went from there. Soon I moved to Spanish Age of Sail coins, buying a 2 escudos and various 2 Reales and 8 Reales coins, along with a couple of French coins. Finally, getting to how I got into ancient coins, I decided to buy a denarius on a whim (because it was only $20 euros) of Julia Domna. I then decided that it wasn’t good enough to only have one ancient coin, so I bought a Tetradrachm (Thasos variety) to keep the denarius company. But then I decided I needed to do better than that, and the rest is history. Unlike many, I had not been trying to collect the 12 emperors…. but…. now that I know it’s a thing…. At the moment, my collection (and I am trying hard to make it a collection, not an accumulation of coins) includes: · Ancient coins – 500 BC to 500 AD (mainly Greek and Roman) · Middle ages – 500 AD to 1500 AD (I’m focussing on Byzantine at the moment, mainly because most of the medieval European coins are both tiny AND expensive) · Age of sail – 1500 to 1850 (as mentioned above, mainly Dutch and Spanish, but also some French and Irish)
