I wanted to add that my brother and I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have found this forum.

My brother doesn't do much socializing, so I speak on his behalf.

It sounds kind of weird, this being the internet and not a physical structure, but, we feel at home here. Making friends has been a bit of a struggle growing up. Here, even though we could be from Uranus, no one cares. We're accepted for who we are. People call us their friends. It's awesome!

I hope that noobs feel the same way when they get here. I hope that they understand how fortunate they are that they're apart of this great forum. It's about the awesomeness of not just the ancients, but the friendship as well.

    Fine work, all!

Nice coins Erin! That 8 prutot is totally killer. I have had one of these near the top of my target list now thanks to the influence of you and Mr. DRay ;)

Also congrats on getting your own place! :)

Edit: Your brother's Daric is also fantastic!

    Hi Everybody...
Yep, @Curtisimo, this is a great idea for a thread.

I guess it is easy to tell that I'm glad to have stumbled into CT. That was around April of this year. Before that I never thought about ancient coins. I came looking to learn about wheat cents and world coins; but, I fell in love with ancients, big time.

I thought about this all day before I posted in this thread. This has been my favorite since I first saw it a few months ago. I have not come across another example of it that I prefer. I do not own this coin but I would love to own one of this quality. The profiles on the obverse are precious. The sweet spiny croc on the reverse is the sweetest thing ever. Looks almost like an insect. I want to hold this coin - bad. There is only one thing I really don't like about this coin and that is that I can not touch it whenever I like.

I think I would like to have an ancient collection that is comprised of coins with doubling and/or counterstrikes. Good stark doubling on ancients makes my heart pound.

I joined Coin Talk about a year ago and have mentioned parts of my backstory, but I guess now's a good time for some more details.

I graduated college with a degree in Biology in 1995, and went on to graduate school. Got my Master's in Molecular Biology and started the Ph.D. program, but never finished due to various reasons. Went on to become a lab technician, and later a lab manager, in a research lab of about a dozen people (grad students, postdoctoral fellows, and undergrads) at a famous medical sciences university in Baltimore. (I'm not naming it because I am not an authorized spokesperson, and don't want anyone to think that my opinions are the official views of the university. Though I rather doubt the university has any official position on slabbing ancients.) So I still get to do some lab research, as well as co-writing scientific papers and grant applications, in addition to handling administrative tasks like ordering supplies, making sure equipment is working, etc. Essentially, I handle a lot of the daily tasks of running the lab so that the PI (Primary Investigator, the Professor in charge) can focus on the big picture goals such as deciding what the lab should study, advising lab members on their projects, and making sure we have funding.

Besides coin collecting, my main interests are birdwatching and travel (these often align nicely). I am a voracious reader (especially history and science) and love movies. (I have the book "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die"- I've seen about a third of them.) But I wouldn't call myself a movie snob- I have a deep affection for cheesy 1950s and 60s sci-fi movies, and one of my favorite TV shows of all time is "Mystery Science Theater 3000". I've also been known to do some fossil collecting, and will save interesting bones or shells that I find in the woods or at the beach. (I definitely have the collector gene.)

My main collecting interest has been Parthian coins, but earlier this year I sold most of my Parthians (400 coins) aran auction by CNG. I am still collecting some Parthians, but more selectively- just a few choice examples of interesting types, not trying to acquire every variety. I also am actively working on Romans (12 Caesars and Five Good Emperors mainly, especially reverse types that reference historical events) and Sasanians. Lately I'm considering expanding my Persian collection to include the various Achaemenid satrapies (I recently won a nice didrachm of Tyre, and am searching for nice examples from Sidon and Babylon) and I may seek out some more early Chinese now that I have Hartill's catalog. Anyway, here's one coin to epitomize my collection, a sweet facing bust Parthian tetradrachm:

And a photo of a Red-and-Yellow Barbet that I took in Tanzania in 2015:

  6. My name is Mike. I'm 28 and live near St. George, UT. I'm pretty sure myself and @spirityoda are the only people who deal in Ancients in southern Utah. At least it feels that way.

I have been a 911 Dispatcher for 6 years and don't see myself doing anything else. I haven't seen much in person, but have sure heard a lot of things that would surprise most; coming from a "Mayberry" type community like Southern Utah.

I joined cointalk 5 years ago. I remember how excited I was, participating in threads at 2 AM, sitting outside in a lawn chair. I post irregularly and am stalking most of the time.

In addition to coins, I collect minerals, football/basketball cards, and used to deal in lapidary work until the bulk of the equipment I used was stolen.

Living in Southern Utah, you're about 5 minutes from a hiking trail, regardless of where you live. So, by proxy, we are the outdoorsy type. Especially since purchasing an Osprey Poco AG Child Carrier/Backpack. If you have a child from 8 months to 3 years old; I definitely recommend it.

My interest in Ancient History, like most of us, is what probably ignited my interest in Ancient Numismatics. For me, specifically, it was being able to hold coins of rulers/peoples referred to in The Bible. I haven't gone the @Deacon Ray route of compiling a Bible specific set; but do own many of which are referenced, biblically.

Currently, and subject to change (but not likely,) I have been collecting coins from Archaic and Classical Greece. I haven't really ventured beyond 280 BC over the last year. I have been thinking about the best way to consolidate my collection and get rid of most of my Roman collection; but like most have said in prior posts; I would probably regret it.

Speaking of Classical Greeks; here's a newp I haven't posted yet:

IONIA. Teos. Ca. 460-420 BC. AR stater (11.38 gm). NGC Choice XF 3/5 - 5/5. Griffin seated right, left foreleg raised / Quadripartite incuse square. Balcer Group IV

Here's the latest family photo of myself, wife, and the child. Taken at the back of Johnson Canyon in Snow Canyon State Park. If you're ever in Southern Utah, you should definitely drive through the park. Not much like it in the US.

Wow - I love your collection Deacon Ray. You've given me a lot of ideas around how I can expand my ancient collection beyond what it currently is (I think I'll need to get into Seleucid - they are my favourite faction in Rome Total War 1&2 after all ;) ).

    Thanks for sharing.

I really like the IONIA. Teos. stater. Excellent. Nice looking family as well. Does "the child" have a name or are you waiting to give him one when the moon is right?

    Hi Parthicus!
I can't see the coin well and I can't seem to make the photograph larger. But please don't post another picture yet. I'll sleep and rest my eyes and look at it again in the morning. Where are you seeing the doubling? My heart isn't pounding, so can there be doubling? ;)

@Parthicus - i had another look at this but I still do not see the doubling you and apparently those who "liked" it as an example of doubling were seeing. That is worrisome to me. Later, at some point, I will find an example of what I mean and post it. I hope you are well. I look at the wonderful coins you sent to me often. Thank you, again, for them.

    Hello :)

My name is Randy, 36 and im a caregiver at a non profit hospice in town.
I've been collection coins (and a lot of other things) since I was very young. I got semi-serious about coins, US mainly, in 1997 and began focusing on ancients starting in 2009. I collect all over the place but focus mostly on Falling Horseman types. I found CT when I bought a SGS ms70 piece of crap quarter, but glad I did.

Hello, I'm Goran, I am 40 years old. I work at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering as an assistant.

I've been collecting Roman coins for the last 4 years, before I collected modern coins and banknotes. I started with the first goal that I have for each emperor and empress a coin. I also collect occasionally medieval coins.

I like to watch TV series, movies, to read comic books.

    My favorite coins:

As some of you may have noticed, I'm not really a cucumber (I'm not a potato either ;) )

My mother must have swallowed a coin while pregnant, as I think I was born with a coin in my hand : I don't remember ever starting to collect.

In my formative years, my godmother used to gift me with those for my birthdays and/or for Xmas (this one is my birth year)

Until I was 18 I would just hoard coins from people travelling abroad (in those years they would visit Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, etc...) and buy the occasionnal french modern

I've shown many times my first roman that my grand father gifted me with that he found at Verdun battle in AD 1916. That's the real start of active collecting for me.

I also collect coins from the Dombes county, much more in a comprehensive way. As there's not a lot of reference books about them, I created a website some years ago and am now considering writing a book some day.

And because my best friend, british citizen, passed away four years ago and his partner gave me the british coins he had inherited from his mother, I also collect coins from the UK

I would say my eyes collect roman, my brain collects Dombes and my heart collects british.

I joined CT twelve years ago, primarily as I wanted to improve my reading and writing of english combined with the pleasure of coining with people showing interest in numismatics. I'm very glad the ancient section went the way it has the last few years, as it's now a very fun and friendly place to visit every day
