Valerian II AR Antoninianus, 256-258 AD, 1.9g, 22mm OBV: P LIC VALERIANVS CAES, Radiate draped bust right. REV: IOVI CRESCENTI, Jupiter riding goat Amalthea right. REF: RIC 13
Nice addition. Mine is the scarcer reverse but not the best portrait. Valerian II (256 - 258 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: . VALERIANVS NOBIL CAES, radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right. R: SPES PVBLICA, Spes advancing left, holding flower & hitching hem of skirt. Antioch or Samosata 21mm 3.7g RIC 52, RCV 10740
Mine is really worn, paper thin and doesn't weigh much at 1.9g. Perhaps some of the bronze leeched out or it was always this way from the mint.
It looks like this kid rode just about every animal. Here he is on an eagle: VALERIAN II AR Antoninianus OBVERSE: DIVO VALERIANO CAES - Radiate, draped bust right. REVERSE: CONSACRATIO - Valerian II riding eagle right, upwards Struck at Rome, 257-58 AD 3.2g, 23mm RIC 9, S 3071
Very nice coin, Bing. These coins can be somewhat expensive in higher grades so when I saw this one for $20, was an acceptable price. It's ERIC rank is 105. Keep those Valerian coins coming if you have any!!
Happy B-Day-Week!! ... nice Valerian-II, Gil-galad!! Valerian II. Caesar, AR Antoninianus mint of Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) 256-258 AD Diameter: 22 mm Weight: 4.18 grams Obverse: VALERIANVS CAES, Radiate and draped bust right Reverse: IOVI CRESCENTI, Youthful Jupiter, head left, raising right hand, riding goat right Reference: RIC V(vol. 1), pg 116, #3 Other: Good silver, well struck and centered. Light golden toning
The only Valerian I have to share is this Valerian I of Alexandrea Troas. I didn't buy it for the sake of the emperor, but for the grazing horse reverse type, common to many issues of the city, but unusual among provincial types for its representation of pastoralism.
