Sorry for the tabloidish subject line, it's really just one normal dog with one head, and another with three. Heh. I'm thinking of starting a small collection of ancient coins with dogs on them, and while I know there are quite a number of types out there, I'm really hankering after those beautiful Segesta issues, which unfortunately tend to be on the scarce side. Until I manage to get myself one of those, these two puppies will have to do. And just so I can have some pretensions about becoming a dog-coin whisperer, I've decided to give them names too (the coins, not the dogs). I'm calling this first one Mr. Huntington, which I know is a little snooty, but he is... *cough* pedigreed afterall . ROMAN REPUBLIC Lucius Caesius Denarius. 3.81g, 20mm Rome mint, 112 - 111 BC Crawford 298/1; Sydenham 564; Caesia 1. O: Youthful, draped bust of Vejovis left, seen from behind, hurling thunderbolt, ROMA monogram to right. R: Two Lares seated right, each holding a staff; nice-looking (Laconian?) hound standing between them, head of Vulcan and tongs above, LA on left, monogram on right, L. CAESI in ex. Ex Archer M. Huntington Collection, ANS 1001.1.24953. This next one is Old Yeller, on account of his slightly mangy yellow tone. ANTONINUS PIUS Billon Tetradrachm. 12.68g, 23.3mm Alexandria, 143 - 144 AD Milne 1746, Curtis 662, SNG Cop 448, Dattari 2366, Emmett 1431. O: ANTWNEINOC CEB EYCEB, laureate head right. R: Serapis as Pluto enthroned left, extending right hand to triple-headed Guardian Hound of the Underworld Cerberus at feet left, long scepter in left, date L-Z flanking across field (year 7). Well, these are my two for now. Please post your coins with dogs on them!
Beautiful coins. I like both. Only have one coin with a multi-head dog. Caracalla (198 - 217 A.D.) AR Antoninianus O: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM, , radiate and cuirassed bust right. R: P M TR P XVIII COS IIII P P, Pluto seated left, extending right hand, holding vertical scepter in left; at his feet to left, Cerberus seated left, turning his three heads right. Rome 20mm 5.2g RIC IV 261c; RSC III 299a; BMCRE V 124
Nice pedigree for that puppy! I like the type too Sadly mine is unpedigreed but it is currently in the TIF Pink Floyd Animals collection. That adds value, right? I agree about the Segesta issues. They sure are pricey. For coins which are supposedly rare or scarce I sure see a lot of them for sale... Here's a interesting and tiny dog coin, also part of the Pink Floyd Animals collection. It's in pretty bad shape but the price was right. It came from that eBay seller we all love to discuss-- the one with the insane asking prices who often accepts offers 75-85% lower. THRACE, Madytos c.350 BC AE13, 1.86 gm. Obv: bull butting right. Rev: dog seated right, ear of grain behind. M-A Ref: Sear 1624 cf.; Copenhagen 923-6
Another from the TIF Pink Floyd Animals collection; track 2, "Dogs" Roman Republic, C. Postumius 74 BC, Rome AR denarius, 18.74 mm, 3.6 gm Obv: bust of Diana right, bow and quiver over shoulder Rev: hound running right, spear below; C. POSTVMI, TA in exergue Ref: Crawford 394/1a
Thanks. Honestly I would've preferred this type over my A-Pi tet, but I just never saw an example up for sale!
Congratulations on the nice additions. I particularly like Mr. Huntington. I've seen many of these for sale, but they always seem to sell for just over my budget. One of these days...... So here is one with a hunting hound from my collection:
Really? Its not that rare. Mine was an ebay grab. Some have better looking Cerberus then others. I like your Pius Cerberus more. Go figure.
Another canine coin which I've posted several times: MOESIA INFERIOR. Marcianopolis Macrinus, with Diadumenian, 217-218 AD issued under governor P. Fu. Pontianus AE27, 12.3 gm Obv: AYT K M OΠEΛ CEV MAKPEINOC K M OΠE ANTΩNINOC, Laureate head of Macrinus left and bare head of Diadumenian right, vis-à-vis. Rev: VΠ ΠONTIANOV MAPKIANOΠOΛEITΩN, Artemis advancing right, hound at her feet, bounding right; holding bow and drawing arrow from quiver; E to left.
I remember your L. Caesius to be a beautiful coin. Looking at it again now I have no qualms about calling it Best in Show... *ruff*! And that Madytos has a real scruffy coolness about it. Both worthy of their pedigrees
Yeah, I would say finding a decent looking Cerberus is the challenge. I'm was happy enough with the one on mine to bring it home from the pound.
The dog on this issue always reminds me of the one from the famous Cave Canem mosaic in the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii.
I got this puppy a week ago. It weighs 2.7 pounds. That equates to 2 pounds of dog & 0.7 pounds of fur. It should grow to be 10-12 pounds. Born on the 5th of May: My plan was to name the puppy "Cinco" but the wife has named it "Callie". The only ancient coin with a dog in my collection depicts the she wolf with Remus & Romulus. Now I need to find a coin depicting a poodle.
This ancient depicting the she wolf is pretty beat but it's the only ancient dog in my collection. As I recall, it cost 74 cents as part of a larger batch. This Irish dog is not so ancient:
This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while!! I'm completely clueless about ancients, is this a particularly scarce coin?
