stevex6 => TOP 10 coin-countdown to Christmas During each of the next 10 days, I will reveal one of my favourite coins from 2016 ... => I will reveal what I feel is my nicest coin on Christmas morning! ... hopefully it ends-up being a good time Cheers & Happy Holidays, my awesome coin-friends!
(December 16th) #10 Marius, Romano-Gallic Emperor, Antoninianus Treveri (Trier) mint 2nd emission, mid AD 269 Diameter: 18 mm Weight: 2.79 grams Obverse: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Clasped hands Reference: RIC V 7; AGK 3b Other: 6h … sweet brown surfaces with traces of silvering From the estate of Thomas Bentley Cederlind SIDENOTE: this was my second most expensive coin purchase of 2016 ($431, delivered), yet it only placed 10th on my Top-10 list ... money isn't everything I love this sweet portrait and cool handshake reverse The coin has rugged eye-appeal and although I spent a bit of cash to snag it => it still makes me happy when I see it!! Good ol' Marius ... his reign was short-n-sweet
A beautiful, realistic profile of this rare emperor, with his strong-jawboned profile. A real work of ancient art in the best condition you could wish. And then the clasped hands reverse, a sign of reconciliation between two concurring armies. A top Cederlind!
Marius is my favorite blacksmith-turned-emperor and that's one of the best portraits I've seen of him . Absolutely true that money isn't everything, though... a couple that I spent the most on this year didn't even make it to the Top 10.
Love the coin! I'm glad you said it was clasped hands. At first glance, it looked like the neatest Bat I've ever seen on a coin. Can you tell I'm new at this? Looking forward to the next 9 days.
Excellent Marius, Mr. @stevex6 ! I have one, but you blow mine away! Nice job! Mine is a placeholder in my Roman Ruler series... But I REALLY like this coin!!! RI Marius 269 Gallic Usurper BI Ant CONCORD MILIT Clasped Hands Ex: @John Anthony ... finder of cool coins...
My Marius is not the best but would probably make the lower end of my top 10 of later Roman Imperials; Antoninianus, Trier---Felicitas holding cornucopia and caduceus:
(December 17th) #9 PONTOS, CHABAKTA, AE23 100-85 BC Diameter: 22.84 mm Weight: 10.60 grams Obverse: aegis with facing head of Gorgon in center Reverse: Nike advancing right, carrying palm branch, [C]ABA KTΏN across, monogram ΔVI Reference: Other: RARE TOWN MINT SIDENOTE: this is one of "7" coins that I've been hunting in my "Aegis/Medusa & Nike" coin-avenue ... this sweet example is the second most difficult to acquire (sadly, the most difficult unicorn-coin still manages to escape my grasp!!) However, this rare-city example has a cool-enough obverse and has an amazingly awesome reverse (it contains 7 out of the 8 letters in the city's name ... pretty rare for this coin-type) ... anyway ... Yah, I'm fairly sure that a few of you CoinTalkers will look-away and wait for tomorrow's coin ... but I hope a few of you realize how nice this example is and how awesome it makes me feel that I've scored it!! (a total bright-light in my thrifty 2016 collection) cheers, my little Aegis-buddy!!
... well, I guess to be fair to my sweet #9th pick I should probably include the whole coin-avenue as my reasoning, eh? So here are its coin-brothers and sisters ... 5 of 6 were purchased in 2016 So, I guess my 9th-pick is actually a "group" of coins ... I hope that a few of you obsessive-coiners enjoy this neat side-collection of mine => must plug the album-holes!! (OCD allert!!) Paphlagonia, Amastris Pontos, Amisos Pontos, Kabeira Pontos, Komana Paphlagonia, Sinope Pontos, Chabakta
Oh, and the fact that I scored two of these cool examples from two of my awesome CT members makes this 9th pick even sweeter ... => JA & Z-Bro ... you guys rock Cheers in 2017, my dear coin-homies!!
I'm pretty sure we're both looking out for Laodicea for you . Great call on the PONTOS, CHEWBAKTA for #9!
I definitely like the idea of a day-by-day countdown. We should maybe all do that? It gives me more time to savor every coin.
