Alright Steve, how about a modern counterstamp from an "ancient" collector? Sorry, I couldn't help it...I have problems man. Bruce
Maybe the denomination varied depending upon the number of counterstamps? Ummm, or perhaps a loveable ancient tot, merely borrowed Dad's stamp and tested it out on my coin? (yup, if you leave a kid alone for a long enough time period, they'll always find something fun to try, eh?)
Thanks Steve. It is a well executed stamp for sure. Love all the counterstamps you guys are showing on ancients. At some point I would like to expand my collection from more modern counterstamps into ancients, but my pockets are small. Bruce
Jerry, that's a good point. Maybe the number of counterstamps had something to do with re-monetizing the money into different denominations.

Bing and vlaha: Thanks for your replies. I do need to educate myself first before I start a collection so then I can gradually pick up one here and there. Bruce
Bruce, I think there are two ways to educate yourself on this subject (maybe three, but I'll stick with two for now). First, and probably best, hang out here or other Ancient forums on line. There is a ton of information produced on this one forum, much coming from what can only be described as experts (not me). The second way to get educated is to do a stevex6 and just jump in with both feet forward. You'll learn as you go along, and the guys and gals here will help with attribution and opinions.
Bruce, this site will give you a decent (and free!) introduction to countermarks on Romans. http://www.accla.org/actaaccla/baker2.html
Just a word for the other countermarks --- Greek. Many Greek coins are countermarked but most are pictorial rather than text. Most of these have been discussed on CT before (I only have so many coins of any genre) but I'll point out the least impressive AE14 of Ephesus with tiny c/m under/on the deer on the reverse. What is it?
I have only one with a counter mark. Mysia, Pergamon Athena, Nike rev. There is one with a real similar mark at acsearch ...http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=511525
??? ... umm, if I kinda squint and cock my head a wee bit, I think it may be a poor rendition of "a bee in flight"?
