Doug, I certainly agree with most of your points ... sadly, my poor flan is smaller than the OP flan and therefore my coin loses a few valuable Chimaera points ... => ummm, but what about the "dove" ... I think I few points should definitely be handed-out for the intricate feather-details and/or the overall "dove-appeal" (again, the OP coin gets full points in obverse & reverse categories => yah, it's an overall beaut) ... Go Dove, Gooooo!!
Yes, Steve, I'll award you one point for dove balance. This does show just how hard it is to have perfection in anything (save, perhaps, spouses who put up with our hobby).
I got this one at the NYINC show this last January. SIKYONIA, Sikyon AR Stater 335-330 BC 11.94 grams, 23.2 mm Obv: Chimera advancing left, paw raised, wreath above, ΣΕ below. Rev: Dove flying left, I left, all within olive wreath. Grade: a gVF nicely toned coin. Other: Sikyon mint. BCD Peloponnesos 219, Traité III 776, BCD Peloponnesos pg 40, 56. SNG Cop 48 var (N instead of I). Ex CNG auction 312 lot 88 originating from a 1930’s collection.
interesting...not a criticism of the coin as I pointed out, just a question based on my reluctance to describe a coin or any part of it as perfect, specifically my own, when selling. I have certainly believed a few of my LRB's to be perfect in some respects, but never quite had the balls to describe them as such.
Awesome coin AJ as always. The toning around the Chimera reminds me of Hades' hair from the cartoon Hercules movie. Not something I would mess with that is for sure.
