An expressive tiny silver obol from Side in Pamphylia, apparently a rare variety as Athena transitions from a more archaic (eye facing viewer) to a classical style (eye facing forward). Stylistically, probably from the mid/late 5th century BC

A coin of THE one and only - Julius Caesar! Minted in Thessalonica in Macedon under Octavian - a bit rough, but this is the only format to get a portrait of this famous Roman dictator without straying far over $100.

A rough but identifiable sestertius of a tough early Imperial personality - Nero Claudius Drusus, the brother of Tiberius, early adoptive heir of Augustus, and father of Germanicus and Claudius. Minted posthumously under Claudius to stress his legitimacy to the purple

A very rare sestertius of Divus Augustus, minted under Tiberius during his later years and featuring the emperor's funeral procession, pulled by a quadriga of elephants

From my own personal collection, a billon tetradrachm of Nero featuring his second wife Poppaea, whom he infamously kicked to death while pregnant with their child

A little scratchy, but a handsome and BIG sestertius of Trajan, featuring a desirable reverse legend - SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANVS

A beautifully rendered silver denarius of Hadrian - a little wear in the high spots, but brilliant bright silver

A lovely denarius of Commodus' sister, Lucilla, with an old ANACS slab insert (ancients collectors like to jailbreak their ancients often!)

A toughie for those who like the ladies - Julia Paula, the poor unsuspecting first wife of the infamously unhinged Elagabalus. They were married for about a year before he cast her aside to marry a vestal virgin!

A good one for the Roman history buff - a chunky sestertius of Philip the Arab minted for Rome's 1,000th birthday and featuring the famous scene of Romulus and Remus being suckled by the she-wolf

For the mythology buffs - a scarcer entry in the famous "zoo series" of Gallienus appealing to the gods for protection from the barbarians. Here, a Hippocamp accompanies the legend NEPTVNO CONS AVG - Neptune, Protect the Emperor!

Before Constantine the Great was "the Great" he held the junior position of Caesar under his father's colleague, Severus II. This coinage only lasted a couple of years because Constantine's brother in law Maxentius plunged the Roman world into civil war by declaring himself to be Emperor without formal appointment. Constantine would not be outshone by this usurper, and claimed the titles for himself, sparking an all-out war that was fought on and off for two decades until Constantine came out on top, unchallenged.
