The face is Hadrian and the legends read Hadrian but the spirit of these early coins really reminds us of Trajan. I always though of Trajan as the king of tiny letters but the need to get Trajan's name on there twice really shrank the available space. Great coin!!!
Hadrian AS Roma 134-38 AD Roma standing4 viewsReference. RIC 824; Obv. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P. Bare head right. Rev. ROMA / S - C. Roma standing left, holding spear and palladium, with shield on his back. 11.83 gr 25 mm h Note. In Greek and Roman mythology, the palladium or palladion was a cult image of great antiquity on which the safety of Troy and later Rome was said to depend, the wooden statue (xoanon) of Pallas Athena
I love all these Hadrian coins. He is one of my favorite collecting subjects. Here are a couple of mine. Two denarius and a sestertius. I will photograph more when I get my copy stand and can take better pictures.
You know, many moons ago I was exclusively a Hadrian collector. Then, I became a dealer, and they all went away! So many coins, many I wish I still had. But, I do still have these:
I am in need of a great Hadrian bronze like one of the many above. Wow, some beauties. Denarius, 123 AD, RIC 77. Obv. IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANUS AVG Rev. P M TR P COS III. Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory and spear, shield behind.
Great coins, fellas ... oh, and epic coin-thread (3/4's of my Hadrians are on page-1 of this 4 year old thread) Wow, how coin-time flies!! (100% good times) Oki => 80% of this thread is your Opus!! (thanks for allowing us to watch you amass such a sweet collection of winners!!)
thank you my coin friend, rocking every day, great to see new Hadrian's here, @Ken you have a very nice winged caduceus is it a quadrans?
one Hadrian with the tiny letters and a standard later one with large short legend, like your description Doug , both salus on the reverse.
Of all these beautiful Hadrian coins posted I counted only 4 facing to the left. Those left facing travel series coins must be particularly scarce.
Thanks, Okidoki! I had a note to check this... was the seller's description and I must not have been confident it was right. Now I know!
