When this thread was first posted, I did some homework on Hadrian and his coinage, and went looking to see if I could find a piece that appealed to me in my budget. (It doesn't take much to get me to shop for coins). I didn't want to settle for something, just to have an example of the emperor, but I kept coming back to this coin all day yesterday and today, so I finally just pulled the trigger. A more discriminating collector probably wouldn't be satisfied with the fact that the legends are significantly clipped in places, but I was drawn to the strong portrait, the equally strong depiction of Roma, and the excellent patina. Also, I don't see any evidence of tooling or any other sort of monkey-business. Just a little honest wear. (Does buying a coin just because a thread was started make me sheeple?)
Baaaaaaa Kidding. Auctions houses and sellers must love sites like this which fuel collectors' desires.
Still haven't received my Hadrian/Africa. Shipped from London 2+ weeks ago. Checked the tracking, looks like it went on a world tour and the tour ended in Missouri, which is a couple thousand miles from me.
hey, i'm only about 2 hours from the missouri border, just have 'em route it to my place. but i DO have a hadrian now!
Nice hadrian. Been debating on adding just a bust type like that. Him & trajan have several to choose from.
On the topic of Hadrian's Travel series coinage, exactly which coins naming the provinces that he visited are considered to be part of this series? Also, does everyone have a favorite in this series they own or would like to own? I don't have any yet, would love HISPANIA for its significance of representing something of a homecoming for Hadrian. And of course, because it the shows the Killer Rabbit of Hispania on the reverse . Z.
The coin I bought just because this thread was started came in last week, so I suppose I should post my own pics of it. I really really like this coin...
Here are two of my Hadrian: A sestertius honoring the legions serving in Syria, and a denarius showing a Liberalitas scene. The sestertius, although worn, is really quite nice and better than the picture.
