Well, the countdown to the Microdisney gig continues (2nd June - my last posting on this thread had a Microdisney song), but here's something different - a coin I waited a while before getting:

A drachm of Emporion, in modern-day Spain. In the summer of 2008, I spent a few days in Catalunya. One day, I spotted a sign saying "Ruinas" and followed it for a look. The ruinas in question turned out to be of Emporion, a Greek and later Roman city on the shores of the Mediterranean. I spent a great day wandering around getting sunburnt and resolved to get a coin from there. The first I found was actually a modern Spanish €10 coin reproducing the drachm above, then I got a half-drachm (more-or-less the above type, cut in half) and then a small fractional coin. Finally, in late-2010, I got this drachm. The reverse is struck from a very worn die, but it's otherwise a nice coin.

And, here's the late, great Dave Allen telling a horror story - he's a good storyteller, irrespective of what he's saying!

    ATB,
    Aidan.

    AUSTRIA/HUNGARY. House of Hapsburg.
    Ferdinand III, AD 1637-1657
AR 3 Kreuzer, St. Viet mint, 1639
    Obv.: FERDI III D G R I (3) S A G H ET B R; Laureate bust right within circle.
Rev.: ARCHI AVS ET CARINT D B ET 1639; Three shields separated by ornaments in a circle, above imperial eagle, right ancient Burgundy, left Carinthia (Kärnten).
    Reference: KM 835

Ferdinand III was archduke of Austria, and King of Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia from 1637 until his death in 1657. He was the last emperor to have any real power over the Holy Roman Empire. Most of his reign consisted of dealing with the military and political aspects of the 30 Years War.

Ferdinand III was a musician and avid supporter of the arts. Upon his death, the renowned keyboardist and composer Jakob Froberger was deeply grieved, and wrote his Lamentation sur la mort de Ferdinand III, a poignant memorial to his good friend and sponsor...
