I did see a reference to a lighthouse of Claudius built on a beached ship that had been used to bring an obelisk to Rome by Caligula. Reading that, I have to wonder if the central ship on the coin is that ship or, since it lines up with the statue, if the intent here was to show the lighthouse detail. I discount this idea because of the placement of the sail but still wonder why drawings of the lighthouse I have seen show nothing that looks like a ship. Perhaps the ship was dismantled and the wood used. We have to remember that the thing was remodeled by Pius and I fail to find dates on the drawings. Is that statue actually the lighthouse or just a statue? Is there a dated image of the original Claudian form of the lighthouse or are these coins the best we have? Are there other forms of this image showing where the die cutter might have copied the design or is it supposed to be entirely original? These questions may be completely ridiculous and I have not done the research. I do believe that interpretations by one worker a century ago can become gospel too easily as one expert copies another.[/QUOTE]
