    Domitian, Sestertius, 86 or 87 AD. Laureate head right, aegis at neck, rev. sc, Domitian on horseback right, about to spear fallen German warrior (RIC.284).

    This coin commemorates roman victories over the Chatii, a germanic tribe
    who inhabited parts of what is now the state of Hessen. His troops, stationed primarily at their base camp in Mogontiacum, are supposed to have crossed the Taunus hills (Mons Taunensium) not too far from where I live. A historically significant coin, with tan brown patina.

Reverse (S P Q R) OPTIMO PRINCIPI, S C in exergue, emperor on horseback charging right, thrusting spear at Dacian enemy before. RIC 543?
    mainly indistinct legends, but a nice expressive portrait, tan patina.
