Yah, I must admit that the fact Doug has been flaunting that wonderful Sinope Medusa of his made me go searching for my own example (man, that dude has so many cool coins, eh?) ... anyway ... Sure, maybe this first coin isn't the world's most wonderful example, but it does have some pretty smooth eye-appeal and it has most of the things I look for with these cool coin-types: - a nice gryphon, visible on Athena's helmet - most of the parts associated with Perseus & Medusa - most of coin's letters/legend => so, all-in-all I think that this baby delivers enough to pull the trigger!! Please welcome my 5th Perseus & Medusa example, but my first example from Sinope ... very cool PAPHLAGONIA, SINOPE, Æ28 CA. 85-65 BC Diameter: 28 mm Weight: 19.0 grams Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right Reverse: Perseus standing facing, head left, holding harpa and head of Medusa; at feet, body of Medusa Reference: RG 62; SNG BMC Black Sea 1531 Other: 12 h … brown and black patina My second Sinope example is another cool coin with "Medusa" showing her pretty face ... Sure again, I've seen better examples from Pontos, but this baby is from Sinope => yup, today I lost my Sinope-virginity and now I'm a total Sinope-whore!! Please welcome my dirty second example ... yummy-yummy!! PAPHLAGONIA, SINOPE, Æ22, MITHRADATES VI Date: 120-63 BC Size: 22.04 mm Weight: 6.29 grams Obverse: Aegis of Athena with head of Medusa at center Reverse: Nike advancing right, holding palm branch over her left shoulder Reference: BMC 48 Other: A nice bronze with nice detail and centering Oh, and please post your Pontos Amisos, Pontos Komana and/or Sinope Paphlagonia examples (sure, it's been done before, but man => this stuff never gets old, my friends => this is why we buy these things, right?) I like you dudes Cheers
No Sinopes for me But Amisos? Sure! Plus this locally-purchased decapitation scene bronze which cleaned up beautifully! Before After I would love to buy some non-Pontos Perseus & Medusa coins.
For consistency, we should call the common ones 'Amisos' the city name in Pontos if we are going to use Sinope (city) in Paphlagonia. Both regions were on the south coast of the Black Sea. Komana was also in Pontos wasn't it? My geography could use some work.
You folks are the most polite, cultured and well mannered folks of late. So what's 'not to like'? [edit to add] I just wish I liked 'ancients' more. Will say this though.......I love history...........
I haven't bought a US coin since I discovered ancients, (although I collected state quarters when I got them in change, and now collect the national park quarters as I find them). Here's my Amisos........I need more. Nice OP, steve... All the ones shown here are great indeed!
My modern coins were the first to be sacrificed (sold) in my quest for Siliquae/Romans. Can't say I am disappointed! Seeing some pretty coins here!
Very nice addition to the harem, Steve. Love the adjustment marks and Black and tan coloring. I need one of these from Sinope and had actually bid on one in yesterday's Pecunem auction. I didn't chase it after I got outbid because there was some double striking on the reverse that whilst cool made me dizzy just looking at it . Did anyone here buy it? Meanwhile... PONTOS, Amisos PONTOS, Komana
Thanks for the great coinpliments and thanks for posting your sweet examples (I love seeing everybody's stuff!!) ... well, I may as well show all 5 of my harem, together ...
Woot a winner for you Steve, i like it. great Helmet, for a wanna have Impuls haha all the best from Europa. Eric
