Ancients lots at Roma auction with provenance

    Hello CT Colleagues

Due to my changing interests in collecting ancients, I have consigned the following three lots to Roma’s upcoming auction e92, to be held on 16 December. The link to the full sale is here

I thought you’d be interested in a few additional comments in addition to Roma’s catalogue listing.

I purchased this coin from Ancient Numismatic Enterprise (ANE) at a recent Torex coin show. The ANE ticket is enclosed, as is another ticket. I have confirmed the NFA provenance.

I could not find this coin in the Schaefer clippings, nor is its control number (79) in Banti.

Anthemius AV Solidus. Rome, AD 468. D N ANTHEMIVS P F AVG, helmeted, pearl-diademed and cuirassed bust facing slightly to right, holding spear over shoulder and shield with horseman motif / SALVS REIPVBLICAE, Anthemius and Leo I, in military attire, standing facing, holding spears and supporting a globus cruciger between them; Christogram in centre field, CORMOB in exergue. RIC X 2822; C. 4; Lacam 71-3; Depeyrot 63/1; LRC 917. 4.10g, 20mm, 5h.

    Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd., E-Sale 81, 25 February 2021, lot 1610

The original Roma ticket from e81 is included.

I think this coin is RIC 2823 rather than RIC 2822. Also, this type is listed in the Dumbarton Oaks LRC as 917.

The two main references for Anthemius’s solidi provide similar information about frequency. This coin is part of Burgess’s series 4, for which he reports 20 specimens. Lacam notes 38 specimens for the ‘EIP’ series, coming from 12 obverse and 9 reverse dies.

The ‘ex-numis’ provenance search came up negative.

    Thank you for your consideration.
