Well, it certainly seems like it's been a while since I bought a new coin ... and it's been even longer since I've knuckled-down and bought a fairly high-end example!! (that darn budget thingy has been crampin' my style this year!!) ... anyway ... I decide to loosen the leash a tad on this purchase ... I hope that you dudes like it hey, I realize that the obverse is a bit soft, but the reverse more than makes-up for the average obverse ... Oh, and Doug => one of the primary reasons I pulled the trigger on this bad-boy was the cool "grasshopper" symbol on the reverse!! (yup, I've now ticked-off the good ol' grasshopper-box ... "tick") I like you guys ... LUCANIA. VELIA AR NOMOS Date: 300-280 BC Size: 21.65 mm Weight: 7.29 grams Obverse: Head of Athena left, wearing crested helmet decorated with Griffin, Θ behind neck Reverse: YEΛHTΩN, Lion right, tearing at prey; above, grasshopper between Φ-I Attribution: SNG ANS 1364
oh wow, that's pretty awesome stevex. man that lion, is sweet and that little grasshopper is cool. so griffon, lion, grasshopper, and "prey"....that would make that a quadruple animal coin?
Fabulous! I have a different coin of Velia although with the same basic theme. LUCANIA, Velia 305-290 BCE AR didrachm, 17.5 mm, 7.3 gm Obv: Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet, decorated with griffin; at left, A Rev: YEΛHTΩN; lion standing on exergual line; above dolphin between I and Φ Ref: SNG ANS 1375-6
Hey, Lil Brother, I really like this coin. Obverse and Reverse. I don't know what you spent (and I do not want to know), but I am sure the ole wallet is a bit light this evening. Oh, but hey, you got yerself a beauty.
Sweet coin Steve!! and..... Who doesn't love Athena, grasshoppers and hungry lions?? You and TIF have one I've been trying to snag for a while now...but there are always too many I want out there and I'm still not quite a millionaire yet.......well, maybe cumulatively!!!
Thanks for the positive coinpliments, gang ... and wow, it's always nice seeing coins from your sweet collection, my Princess (man, they'd look very cool together, eh?)
Here's my latest kitty cat... Troas, Antandros Æ12, 1.54g; c. 4th-3rd centuries BC. Obv.: Laureate head of Apollo right. Rev.: ANTAN; lion's head right. Reference: SNG von Aulock 1493.
This poor Velia was one of my first Greek coins. I don't know when I got it but it before 1987 when I started my catalog of the 40 coins I owned then. I see no hopper or other. My favorite of the city is the one with lion and lunch. I have two, regular and fourree. The standard Velia stater is high purity and, therefore, very soft silver.
Great coins, Doug ... thanks for posting 'em Ummm, how 'bout your grasshopper? => please feel free to post that cool example
