Ho-Ho-Ho => no problem, coin-bro!! Ummm, but just for the record => "TIF" is really Santa (I am merely her humble Elf-helper!!)
A couple of new additions for the Pink Floyd Animals collection, some fantastic canines of Argolis. These are wonderful coins, great condition and good strikes. I chuckled when I saw the provenance... ex Dr. Georgios I. Michael Collection. I wonder if that's his real name or if its one of those pseudonymous provenances and the collector has an inordinate fondness for Wham! As for the coins - very VERY nice! I especially like the second one where it looks like he's kind of munching on a Scooby snack and just really pleased about it.
Awesome coins. The A just pops out. Great additions! I am also assuming, TIF, that you saw the Pigasus that went up a couple of days ago.
Went up where? If vcoins, yep, someone brought that to my attention. A very nice one, but I have an almost identical issue and have several more from Klazomenai. Right now I'm looking for pigasi from other cities. If not on vcoins... show me
Finally received that Samos drachm today and took some pictures. Still struggling with camera (and camera user) issues. Very happy to have found and successfully bid on this coin! IONIA, Samos. 510-500 BC AR drachm, 13.7 mm, 3.2 gm Obv: forepart of winged boar left Rev: facing lion scalp with dotted square, within incuse square Ref: SNG Cop 1673
Thanks, Doug. I'm rarely completely happy with the pictures and should spend some quality time learning about f-stops and such. The camera I used for this, my new Canon, has a problem and pictures turn out grainy and of unnaturally low contrast, almost like there's a film on the sensor. Need to send it back, it's not me (this time). Not as big an issue with these macro shots but in regular life photos it's dreadful. I'm using LED light + ambient room light now and need to go back to a halogen spot which required less color correction. While I'm visiting my mom for Christmas I may pick up a copy stand too. Or maybe just make a mount like you did.
This may not be kosher (pun unintended), but even as I think it's a lovely coin, I actually prefer the photography.
I finally have a moment to post the coin from TIF that Steve graciously passed on to me. There were many fine examples to choose but I settled on a Carausius because I didn't have him already and I really like the off center strike. Thank you again to TIF and Steve and sorry it took so long to post TIF. I have had a stupidly long January. I took a note from everyone and I put the coin on a small stand before taking the photo and I must say I really like how the pictures came out. I just need to work on lighting as you can tell form the shadow. Not half bad for a picture taken with a tablet though.
Agree! You also need to get a smaller stand for smaller coins. I used to use only dowel rods but now have a iron rod about 3/16" diameter on which I have a series of different short pieces of dowel toppers. That makes it easy to change from 3/8" for denarii to 3/4" for big coins. If I need really small, I just put a bit of clay on the iron to pad it.
