The die was used for quite a while as they must have been rushing to cut its replacement. There are several of these in existence that show the die getting worse and worse. I wonder how long it takes to engrave a die for one of these. I suspect they set a record cutting the next one of these. Syracuse tets were always made with one set of dies at a time and when one failed, the other was used with a new mate until it failed. That pattern allowed Boehringer to work out the complete series of these assigning numbers to each.
