Ummm, 30 minutes has passed, so I poured another vino and I'm back at my machino!!

Hmmm, well I already know you dudes love Medusa and Pontos, so does this ever get old?

=> Bring-on your Medusa and Perseus winners!!

Yah, I'm sure I could also try to collect this entire set, but the price-tag on these babies is considerably higher than the cool, yet humble aegis examples!!

    Pontos, Amisos

Pontos Amisos again.jpg Pontos amisos number two.jpg Pontos Amisos Version three.jpg pontosg.jpg pontosh.jpg

Oh, and I also tossed-in my
Pamphlagonia, Sinope example ... a total winner

    Sinope Medusa.jpg

... arrrgghh ... I know that Z-Bro has a sweet example from Komano (maybe one day he'll man-up and try to be a solid coin-buddy?)

Just jokes, Z ... you're already in my stevex6' Coin-friends Hall Of Fame!!

    emoticon cheers too.gif

Cool. I always wondered how it would feel to complete a collection.
    Congrats Stevex.

I have a few things to toss into this thread :)

First, not a Black Sea coin but something which brings me one coin away from completing a denomination set of Klazomenai archaic silver winged boar coins. What the denominations should be called is speculative and there is not agreement in archives and in new listings. The largest denomination is sometimes called a drachm and sometimes a didrachm. The drachm (or didrachm) weight ranges from ~6.5-6.9 gm. Other denominations include hemidrachm (check!), diobol (check! check!), obol (need!), and tetartemorion (check!).

I've been hunting for one for three years. Several have come to market during that time. Most cost more than I wanted to pay, some considerably more but the price was commensurate with their much better condition. I didn't have to have an EF example and this one came up at the right time and hammered for the right amount. The new leader of my silver Pigasus squad arrived this afternoon :)

    KlazoDrachm.jpg
    IONIA, Klazomenai
    498-494 BCE
    AR drachm, 6.77 gm
Obv: forepart of winged boar right
    Rev: incuse square, somewhat quadripartite
Ref: Rosen 563; Jameson 1492; Asyut 615; Traité II 487; SNG Copenhagen 1-2)
ex NFA MBS (18 October 1990), part of lot 310

    ...

As for the OP theme, I have two common Black Sea Aegis/Nike bronzes. It's awfully tempting to hunt for one from each issuing city and I'll probably keep a casual eye out for the rest. There is just no way I can hope to match Steve's awesome Laodikeia though!

    PONTOS, Amisos
85-65 BCE, time of Mithradates VI Eupator
    AE 22 mm, 7 gm
    Obv: Aegis facing
Rev: AMI-ΣOY; Nike advancing right with shouldered palm branch; monograms flanking
Ref: SNG BM Black Sea 1177-1191; HGC 7, 242

    PAPHLAGONIA, Amastris
    85-65 BCE
    AE, 23 mm
    Obv: facing gorgoneion in Aegis
Rev: AMAΣ-TPEΩN; Nike advancing right, holding palm frond
    Ref: Lindgren 78; BMC 85, 10
I bought this one because I was at a coin show and it is hard to refrain from purchasing stuff, and it was very cheap :D

    ...

Steve also called for the decapitation parade, so here are mine... all Amisos . I wanted one badly because everyone was showing theirs at the time and it's a great story coin. I bought one with a great reverse and a month or two later found a corroded or encrusted example at a local jewelry store (not set in a bezel). It cleaned up amazingly well (second coin below). At some point in the last year or so I bid on a third example. It was going cheaply and I that darned bid finger had a mind of its own :D. I really should sell or trade one of them.

    That is a fact!

Our hobby is unpopular enough that it is often hard to find someone else who barely has a clue but 'get it' grade people are hard to assemble. Take a globe an put in a pin where the people that mean most to your collecting life live. It is depressing. I have met four or five of you in person. Will 2017 boost that count?

I forgot to say publicly: Great coin, Steve! We had been following this process privately which is always the way to go when chasing things important to you.

How cool would it be to have a coin-talk "reunion"? I'm guessing we're all too far way from one another to make that happen, but it would be fun...

This AE20 from Sinope has an especially large and pathetic Medusa.

Wow wow wow! Steve... that is a stupendous Laodikea! Congrats on completing your set of official mint Aegis/Nike coins. Hmmmm... maybe now you also need an "irregular mint" example for a total OCD fix? ;)

Congrats on finishing your set Steve. I've seen that type and have wanted to add one to my collection. Had no idea there were so many different regions. One day I may add one, depending on grade and price of course.
