Just an opinion from a non-competitive non-participant: Any price limit or lack thereof will still run afoul of the fact that coins more people consider worth having cost more than coin fewer people want. Rule four would seem to even the playing field a bit with the categories:
    a. Eye Appeal
    b. Value for money
    c. Historical Interest

    a. favors high grade coins whether they are boring or interesting.
    b. should offset the added value of expensive coins since a $10,000 coin should be 1000 times as interesting and beautiful as a $10 coin but there are still those among us who believe anything expensive is by definition better. These people drive across the street to pay more for gas or groceries. We also have to allow for the 'value' of enjoyment as well as potential resale.
    c. I'd favor this more if it did not limit interest to just historical interest but allowed any kind of interest that we might discover.

I am in the minority in my belief that an aureus and a denarius both of Julia Domna with the same reverse would tie since the gain gold gives in 'a' would be offset by 'b' and tied in 'c'. The winner would be determined by a decision on relative merits of style vs. value (not just resale but all kinds of value). In the end, the most important factor will be whether Price Waterhouse hands Steve Harvey the right envelope.

Can you explain why you would need more than one coin for this "tournament?" (No, I have no coins that I'm able to enter so this inquiry is about the structure.) Surely you wouldn't allow an entrant to switch coins in later rounds (if he/she makes it through earlier rounds), since it would be possible that a new later-round coin wouldn't have received enough votes to make it through earlier rounds.

You might want to consider separating this into categories of coins, e.g.: (1) actual historical events; (2) mythological events; (3) mythological creatures; (4) actual historical individuals; (5) mythological individuals; (6) etc.

@panzerman would win were there no price limit. His high end gold has no match.

@stevex6 will win this given the price limit. Wait till he whips out one of those awesome budget animal coins he seems to be an expert at finding.

I say we give him the title already so we can make our donations to the charity. LOL.

That would very much depend on whether you favored Greek gold, early Roman gold, or Byzantine gold, all of which are owned by different high-end collectors on this site.

In reality, this raises a real issue about personal preferences and their effect on voting in this tournament. Just as some people despise "modern art" like Picasso, Dali, and Miro, while others love this type of art, it's likely that some collectors on this site might love Byzantine gold while others find its artistry inferior to say, ancient Greek or earlier Roman gold. Such preferences affect voting in all price ranges of coins, not just higher-priced ones.

Panzerman has high end gold Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Sassanian, etc. You name it, he has it. Probably one of the largest ancient and medieval gold collections I've ever seen compiled by a single individual.

Sorry guys, but the forum rules prohibit contest of this nature. The thread is closed.

    edit-
The parts that caused a problem with the rules have been changed and or omitted.

Have fun and good luck :)

Thanks GD - looks like the cost limit was removed? Just making sure I understand the new rules if we're doing this...

    I'm confused?

we had a cool lil' $100-limit contest and that wasn't legal, but we can have a contest where there is no coin-dollar-limit?

    ... or what has changed?

Hello all. It was brought to my attention that having a monetary requirement of any kind on a contest is against forum rules. The moderators were kind enough to allow me to change the rules and reopen the contest so big thanks to Doug. I think this a good thing as it makes things very simple and will solve the problem of some members wanting to get on-board and show off their sweet coins but couldn't.
@panzerman and @IdesOfMarch01 can have fun with the rest of us now :)

As far as keeping it fair I think as Doug pointed out above the voting categories should help to level the playing field for high dollar vs. low dollar coins.
I agree with this 100% and the moderators allowed me to edit this rule to show
We have 16 entries so far which is a good number for a bracket. I hope everyone is still on board even with the change in the rules (remember this is for fun guys!).

We would need 4 more people to expand to a workable bracket if anyone else wants to join. Now that there has been a rule change I'll leave the entry period open until 6:00 PM CST. If we get 4 heavyweight coiners that wanted to join and now can we will expand the bracket. If not we will stick with 16 and I will post the initial bracket and matchups this evening.

Thank you to everyone that has entered... CoinTalk is great :)

Hello everyone and thank you all for volunteering to play in the tournament. Unfortunately we didn't have enough to expand past 16 participants but I still think that is a great turnout for our first year! I will be sending messages to everyone who entered later this evening to get photos and descriptions for the first round. Expect to start seeing the contest polls soon and I will continue to update this thread with the overall tournament progress.

Below is the bracket. As stated in the rules all participants were seeded by number of comments to CoinTalk.

Even if you decided not to participate in the tournament itself you can still have some fun trying to see if you can predict a "perfect bracket." :D

Why is that a rule? + why do you care to ruin peoples fun by "enforcing" it?:angelic:
