Coins that speak for sure, especially the OP of course I tend to buy coins that speak to me, but some speak loud One of them I bought while still a newbie, and at first glance I knew I would purchase it, although at that time it would be a lot of money for my purse. Lucky me, my wife was at the coin fair with me (she rarely does) and said, "yes, that's a great coin, you should buy it". And here it is, thirty years later, still in good place in the trays : Severus Alexander, Denarius Rome mint, AD 225 IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG, Laureate head of Severus Alexander right IOVI VLTORI, Jupiter seated left holding victory and spear 3.26 gr Ref : RCV #7873 (75), Cohen #97 But sometimes, the coin literally screams "BUY ME !!" As some of you may know, I'm building a specialized collection of coins from a small region of France called Dombes (see here for details : http://monnaiesdeladombes.blogspot.fr/ ) At first, when I started collecting them, around 1998, little was known about them due to a lack of resources (only two references books were available at that time, both edited during the 19th century). In 2004 however Mr Jean Paul Divo, the well known swiss numismatist, edited a new book dedicated to Dombes coinage which became instantly the reference book for them. One of these coins, a gold pistole struck for Prince François II de Montpensier was described in that book as "unique" and sold at an auction in 1993. Exactly the type of coin you can just dream of, and I did. A lot. In 2006 a very big collection of feudal coins has been offered at auction, and guess what, a second example of that coin appeared, far better than the first one. Of course, I could only dream of it, the estimation being far over what I could afford. So I passed. And the coin (that coin) was sold again at another auction one year later...and I passed And the coin (that coin) was sold another time at another auction one year later...and I passed The dream coin, turning and turning around you, and screaming "BUY ME !!" "BUY ME !!" "PLEASE !!" Quite frustrating, isn't it ? In 2010 my father had the first good idea of selling his mother's house (she had passed away five years before and difficult the decision of selling it). His second good idea has been to gift his kids with part of the money he got from the house. And, miracle ! two month later, an auction offered.....
