    Sorry I missed this...

Where, what, how did I miss this thread???

Eng- That is really nice of you. Jw hit the nail on the head. Although I might be "relatively" young as compared to some other guys I don't think I can quite qualify as a YN. I have been somewhat collecting ancients since 1998(ish).

I would love to sit down and clean some coins, but I have many projects going on.

Noob Jr. is still a bit too young. I really don't think he will realize how cool the ancient coins are until he realizes what year it is today, and can do the math.

I think its a great idea. :) and thanks for including me.

I believe you are correct with the Macedonia, Philip II, Horse with Rider.

I just got the coins in as well. I gave Eng a message about it and was waiting for his reply about it. One of them could use a touch-up cleaning but the others just won't improve because they're worn and already cleaned. He also threw in a rather nice Constantius Gallus coin. A big thanks to Eng!

I'm out of distilled water and won't get any for awhile until I go to the grocery store again.

Got the coins as well and waiting for a reply back. Kept 4 and gave the other 3 to my kid brother. I don't think any of them, except maybe one, can be improved by cleaning. But they are neat coins, and I thank eng for sending them. Among the coins I kept for myself were my first Roman Greek provincials, and one was of an emperor I didn't have before.

We have seen something important here when some of our younger members realize that some of the coins are not going to improve with more cleaning. Unfortunately too many uncleaned coins are actually uncleanable coins and were sold that way because they were not candidates for processing commercially. Certainly we find some good items in the lots and we gain experience in reading and identifying even the ugliest scraps of metal but it is important to develop a feel for when we should clean and when we should walk away (or give them to the kid brother - hopefully with the lesson that he shouldn't scrub them either).

the coin on the right is in pretty bad shape, but can see the prominant SC on the back. but look at the one on the left. all sort of cool countermarks...sorry my picture doesn't capture them well. on the obverse, there is an AVG (possibly AVC) at 3 o'clock, at 6 o'clock is what i think is a TICA. These two may indicate "tiberius agustus" or less likely (as I understant it) titus agustus....either way. neat. at 10 and 8 o'clock are roman helmets with dots, on the reverse is a dolphin! don't know what these mean exactly but may be associated with the region of moesia. here some interesting stuff on roman coin countermarks if interested....

Seriously, do not bother. I have not seen any really good "uncleaned" ancient in quite a while. Used to be there were so many flooding the marketplace they only cherrypicked larger, earlier, better coins and left lower grade, (vg-ish) large coins and high grade smaller coins to be sold in bulk. Nowadays, any F or better will get pulled and cleaned up. Almost all "uncleaned" coins is what we used to call "floor sweepings", coins not worth cleaning because it will always be low grade. They actually make more selling them "uncleaned" than they would cleaning them up, because of the thrill of the hunt.

If you wish to get into ancients cheaply, nice little late roman bronzes are abundant and cheap.

Yes, I agree. Sorry Eng I never meant your gesture wasn't a grand one. My post was more for those thinking of buying these instead of cleaned coins. Sorry if anyone took it any other way.

No worries my friends, I hope to spark something inside these young guys, gales. Our young people are our future, i'm 55 and the youngest one in my coin club, we need more youth, male and females.
We have a give away at the Puyallup fair, So. of Seattle every year, we see many kids come back year after year.
In the spring we have our PNNA show, Walt Ostromecki ( ANA Vice President)will come to help the kids, Scouts, do a treasure hunt, always trying to get these kids hooked on coins. Walt has a true vision for these kids.
Seeing how there's a lot of young Ancient collector's on the board is awesome, So that's why i want to share this with them...:)
