I'm just catching up on this thread myself. As far as I'm concerned, fractional silver with good detail is ALWAYS a winner!
Btw - whomever my Secret Santa is ... I have been away from my home town since 18 December, so haven't checked my mailbox. I will announce the present when i get it
So the in laws are in town,we had them over tonight, so i'm a little behind. today i pulled the Rib roast out and seasoned it, being a retired meatcutter you have to get the roast and do the seasoning. this is this years roast. 12lb. hand rub minced garlic, seasoned with cracked black pepper, then i rub it with a herb season and retie, yummy. Tomorrow night we have Chinese food which we have done for years. Tonight i'm posting my Secret Saturnalia, i received a beautiful card. and in it was a beautiful coin. My S.S. wanted me to attribute the coin, in a small envelope was hidden from me the info. so i went to wildwinds to see what i could find, after a hour i gave up and went on vcoins and looked for Bigas, Oh ya i cheated, but now your curious.also a very nice note from my S.S. Roman Republic. ( i didn't find the date, had to cheat) 128BC. T Cloelius. Silver denarius, Obv. helmeted head of Roma right, wreath behind, Roma below. Rev. Victory in a Biga right, ear of corn below, the rearing horses. T CLOVI in ex. 18mm x 3.78g. You Roman Republic collectors know this coin, i just love it!! Oh did you want to see the coin.. I received my gift about a week ago and originally intended to open tonight…but the suspense is killing me, so I opened it a few hours early. While the Roman Republic is my first love, my second is archaic Greek coins, and that is what I received -- what a great gift! Who would not treasure a beautiful example of fractional currency from the late 6th c. BC? Ionia, Miletos late 6th century BC Obv: Forepart of lion r., hd. turned back Rx: Star ornament within incuse square AR obol (twelfth stater) .9 gm - 9 mm Such a tiny coin! Makes it difficult to photograph. Thanks Secret Santa! Your gift is now one of the oldest ancient coins in my collection. Accompanying the coin was a letter, welcoming me to the Coin Talk community and letting me know what a good girl I have been this year. Truly, I enjoyed the letter as much as the coin. Santa explained that the elves had a hard time striking Roman denarii, but did manage to make great strides in striking coins by producing this archaic lion -- made with Xmas spirit and aged with Xmas magic. Merry Christmas everyone! This has been great fun, and I cannot wait to do it again next year!!
Yep, today I'm wearing one of the T-shirts I just brought back from the Virgin Islands. The flowers & insects are hatching in the forest where I live in CT. The snow is probably just delayed until June. Merry Christmas. I'm looking forward to posting my secret Santa gift this evening.
