Greetings fellow ancient collectors, A couple of weeks ago I reached a milestone in my collection of ancients by obtaining my first sestertius. The coin was struck under the emperor Septimius Severus, and was found on an English farm in 1948. The coin has a nice earthy green patina and is 29mm wide. But enough typing, take a look! Please feel free to post any sestertii you may own! -Mike
Nice one. I'd add it to my collection too. Mind as well share my first sestertius. Crispina (178 - 182 A.D.) Æ Sestertius O: CRISPINA AVGVSTA, draped bust right. R: HILARTAS S-C, Hilaritas standing left, holding long palm and cornucopiae. Rome 18.8g 33mm RIC III 668 (Commodus)
Wow! She's a beauty CoinMike. I really love the green patina and the way it intensifies the details of the coin by adding contrast. Nicely done!
That is an absolutely awesome pick-up ... fantastic eye-appeal (congrats) => my very first Sestertius was also a Sep-Sev (ummm, but not nearly as nice as your new sweet baby)
what a great color! a super first sestertius...or second...or 100th! here's my fav, i post this thing all the time..
Very nice looking Sestertius CoinMike. I would welcome it in my collection anytime. My records from my earlier days of my collection are not very complete, so I am unsure of my first Sestertius. However, I think this was one of my first: MAXIMINUS I AE Sestertius OBVERSE: IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG - Laureate, draped bust right. REVERSE: SALVS AVGVSTI - Salus seated left, feeding snake on altar Struck at Rome, 235-236 AD March - January 20.7g, 29.5mm RIC 85
That is an excellent coin, Mike. I would be happy to have it in my collection. My most recent sestertius is always my favorite. For the time being, it's Gordian III...
Antoninus Pius Æ Orichalcum Sestertius. 24.2g, 34mm OBV: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVIII, Laureate head right. REV: LIBERTAS COS IIII S C, Libertas standing left holding purse and extending hand. REF: Cohen 543. RIC III 929
This is my first and only Sestertius that I purchased last year. Even though it is low grade, I really enjoyed this coin. It's probably the largest ancient coin I have and it sure is heavy for it's size.
