Admittedly I do not read every single CT post, and I do not collect ancient coins. But sometimes it is a certain theme, or an odd or funny topic title, that makes me curious, and I'll have a look at "ancient" topics. And in general I find it important and interesting to know what people used as money.

Also, the symbols used on ancient coins can be fascinating. Earlier this month I visited the Mint Museum in Madrid, and the guide explained, for example, how Aigina changed the (sea) turtle on its coins into a (land) tortoise when it ceased to be a sea power. You collectors of ancients will of course know about this :) but it was something I would not have noticed ...

Even if I no longer have all the time I would like to actively participate in the Forum, I too have noticed how lively the interest in and discussion around ancients here has become. It seems to be a humored and light and friendly discussion as well, unlike other well know ancient forums. As Mat mentioned, there was a time when a post on ancients here would elicit relatively little response. That certainly has changed, with that fellow steve inputing much of the new focus in ancients here at CT!
As it is, I wish I had more time to actively participate, but obligation of professional life get in the way. Hopefully that will change soon.

Well I do collect both ancient and more modern US coins but I don't say much as there are more experienced ancient collectors than I. Do have to admit that it has been fun since Stevex came along. And I have learned tons of information and what to look for in ancient coins.

It's as I said. Steve, and others like him, add to the experience. I'm all for the academics, but a little levity goes a long way. It's nice to know others have noticed as well. I really enjoy our little coin "club" and wouldn't want it to change.

Well, it is that 'levity' that has brought me over to this area of the forum and, while sampling some of Steve's (and others) hilarity, I find I always leave learning something new.

    Wow ... thanks, gang!!

=> huh yah, it is always nice to be recognized as being a complete wildcard and a random Edited - rules -disturber!!

... sadly, I think that my wonderful late mother must have read those same comments on every single one of my elementary school report-cards!!! (I love ya, Ma)

Oh, and although I do agree that TIF, Bing, Mat, chrsmat71 and a few more of us "regulars" do try to add a bit of "humour"
=> Doug is definitely the rock-solid backbone to this coin-group!!

=> The dude is absolute money!! ... yah, not only does he bring top-notch experience and amazing writen gems, but he is actually the funniest and the biggest character of all of us!! (probably 80% of his sly-jokes go un-noticed, but Doug is definitely a perfect mix of knowledge and good-times!!)

    => Cheers, dawg!!!

    :D

Collecting ancient coins was once a hobby reserved for kings. Today we still have some of their Royal Collections intact in public museums. Those who loved coins but lacked the title or wealth might aspire to be curator of some wealthy collector's holdings. Today there are still the high end rich clientele but there are now some of us who do not take ourselves quite as seriously. I would prefer we not get kicked off of another venue so I hope we can keep discussions at least close to on topic and civil.

I don't think I have really seen uncivil discussions here on ancients. I think we genuinely like each other, brought together by our hobby.

Now on topic, with that Steve character around, I am not sure of... :D

NOTE => I have posted over 3,600 messages and during that marathon-posting, Mat and I have only been reprimanded "once" ... and that was due to some random Maxim-magazine chick posting ... yah, because Mat has some weird obsession with chicks!! ... somebody should talk to that guy!! (he's out there!!)

thanks again, coin-comrades ... I like you too

    Grouchy old man rant:
Since I worry too much that some completely new beginner might stumble upon this thread and see Randy's post without being in on the joke, please be sure you understand that all four of the "Randy Grade" are modern fakes with a cash value approaching zero. If you are a new collector of ancient coins and some seller offers you coins like these, run, do not walk, the other way. In truth there are quite a few fake ancients but probably no more than there are fakes in other areas of coin collecting. The trouble usually comes when a new collector thinks even for a split second that he can get a genuine 2000 year old coin of the types these copy for a bargain price. These four are horrid replicas that should not fool anyone who stops to think about it but we who hang around places like Coin Talk see someone asking about one of them every few months. Sometimes they come with a really great story about grandpa bringing them back from the war or having found them in a flea market on the last trip to Italy but they are always the same and always fakes from the old days of the 20th century (that may be giving some too much credit).

Please, if you are new to an interest in ancient coins do not take the mention of these items in this thread as any sign that these four items are in any way ancient coins - not even a 1% chance. The guy that posted them and the others that commented were in on the joke. Now you are, too. Be interested in ancient coins and read the threads here on CT but spend your money on real items from people you can trust and don't buy these four coins.

    End of stiff backboned rant.

    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

i enjoy the ancient/modern mix and the same forum actually. i only dabble in modern world coins (some would say i only dabble in ancients) but i like to check out the modern threads here as well...and i've picked up many more modern coins since i've join cointalk. plus i suppose we all meet in that hazy medieval zone in the middle sometimes? i hope the rising ancient tide has lifted all the boats here.
