If Gordian III coins ever become a controlled substance, you know where you'll all be seeing me...America's Most Wanted. Sallent: "Hey kid, come here...wanna buy a Gordian III coin? All the cool kids are into Gordian III. You wanna be a square?"
Shouldn't that reward be posted in antoninianii rather than dollars? Which begs the question of what currency symbol to use. Maybe that circle-A, like the Anarchy symbol? Ⓐ
Glad to see this resurrected. I enjoy seeing what everyone looks like. Here's an old one of me, and my first wolfhound at 1 year. A gun too. It's a Martini-Henry pickup artifact from the Boer War. Picked up at Faber's Put after the battle, Cape Town, South Africa, 30th May, 1900. Maybe I'll find a current one some day.
Here I am a couple of months or so ago. An old retired competitive high power rifle shooter squeezing off a few rounds down range. Too old to shoot in organized matches now - I can’t get into the positions and my eyesight is too poor. But I still enjoy hand loading, squeezing the trigger and the smell of smokeless powder in the air. It seems every rifleman has a very favorite 30/06 that he claims is the most accurate high power rifle he has ever owned (or at least they used too). Well here Is mine: CZ 550 American with a red dot scope (I don’t like big scopes) Winchester brass, 150 grain Hornady spitzer bullets, 48 grains IMR4895 powder (50,000psi.), CCI 200 Large Rifle Primers - very accurate indeed - I can drive tacks using that combination in this rifle.
Great to hear! I've handloaded for 55 years, cast for 45, and swaged for 30, and love the smell of gunpowder too!
This is fun!!! Man we are motley crew jk. It is really fun putting faces to coins! Here is my professional look (from about 3 years ago. just before the grey and 3 sons came along) and then my leisurely look (taken last Halloween at work). And my 1st coin to go along with it...
James, that's a US Airforce cap. All this time I thought you were a veteran of the Royal Air Force of the UK. Great to see you posting. It seems like it's been a while.
United States Air Force Veteran it is, Ray. Thanks - it is Cactus growing season and Calligraphy has been in much demand recently so I have mostly just been lurking here and not posting - I really enjoy this Forum and I intend to participate more.
Thank you @Alegandron. That is the first time anyone has called my Calligraphy “Cool” - I treasure that!
Thought I'd follow LordMarcovan's lead and reread the entire thread. A couple of observations: 1) This is the longest thread ever! At least it seems so. Allow a lot of time to read it in its entirety. 2) Other than a few differences of opinion, this has to be the most civil, classy group of people I've had a chance to observe and interact with. 3) No one looks like you would expect, but you are all good looking. 4) Even though I don't know anyone personally, I get all warm and fuzzy associating with all of you. 5) You opened my eyes to Ancient Coins and made them fascinating.
@Ryro- Dude! You would make a most excellent Augustus! I shall march beneath your triumphal arch. That could be the best photo for the theme of this thread.
Are those photos of you, @Ryro ? When I first glanced at them, I thought they were photos of Actor Ewan McGregor
Thanks! The question is, would I rule justly and evenly, like a Pius or Arelius? Or would I slip into depravity like Tibs and Caligs? I gotta admit, I don't like senators but boy do I have the right horse for the job!
But which Ewan? Young devil may care Train spotting Ewan? Or the more mature and contemplative Obi Wan Kenobi version? Who am I kidding? Either way, thanks!
Sorry, I forgot about the Train Spotting film! More so, the Black Hawk Down role. The Train Spotting character more closely resembles the condition I was in back then.
And I am in pretty good historic company as a Calligrapher. Elizabeth I was a Calligrapher. Her tutor, Roger Ascham, had himself studied the craft during his sojourn in Italy - probably under the tutelage of one of the Renaissance writing masters - and he passed it on to his young pupil, Elizabeth, who thereafter wrote all of her notes and correspondence in a refined Italic hand. And as a numismatic contribution here is a shilling of Elizabeth:
Double thanks @Deacon Ray !! He was amazing in black hawk down And I remembered reading some allusions to your past. Glad you made it out to the other side buddy. Though I'll always enjoy me some...
