That's a lovely assemblage, @Alegandron! I think my one and only scarab (also an ex Hendin Thutmose III) came from the same CNG sale. I'm pretty sure I remember eyeing yours... If someone's into Egypt and regrets the lack of coins, scarabs do seem like a good idea! And CNG seems to carry them often enough.
a shell is shell is a shell. it should look old and have man made markings on it. these were used as currency in asia and africa up until the last few centuries by some. other than carbon dating, i really can't think of anyway to authenticate one for being ancient.
There are many types of Kauri shells, the Cyprea Moneta was the the most commonly used as protomoney. Here are a couple of these Moneta's ,freshly imported from the Maldives, and bought from a german seller on eBay.
There are no coins from the reign of King Tut, but there are coins of Cleopatra: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/egypt/cleopatra_VII/t.html
Yah, I am a total believer that "modern coins" originated in Lydia ... just because (previous coin-guy's literature) => I don't really want to include trading-items of worth like "cattle, whores, knives" as being official coins ... although I'm sure that they served the same purpose (bartering/trading) Yah sorry, but who am I? ... just another coin-opinion Oh, but I do think that scarubs are super cool ... Severus Alexander => wow, your example has super eye-appeal with that sweet glaze (congrats) I agree that these scarubs should come from reputable sellers ... here are my only two humble animal-examples (From the David Hendin Collection)
Vcoins has a few dozen, eBay has many from some reputable sellers, and look at upcoming auctions. Many reference books are published as well.
I believe @TIF is correct. That is why I put "potential" First Coinage of Egypt. Most of what I have read states this, although there are still some articles out there stating that they are in fact, Egypt's first coins. Cool to have, cool for the story, cool for the mystery. LOL, maybe TIF is only "Alternative Facts".
I really like this one! I saw this one, and seriously thought about chasing it. I already had a Thuthmos III, so I did not chase it... Of all the Pharaoh Scarabs, Thuthmos II is the most common. That glaze is killer!
Thanks for the kind words, @stevex6 and @Alegandron. Yes, it was the glaze that captured me on this one... lucky it also has a small chip or it wouldn't have come within reach! (I love scarab #2, steve - I'll have to get some more, to cover a big swath of Egyptian history.)
Depends on your definition of "coin." My definition is that it must have some kind of mark/symbol of an issuing authority. Using my definition, the two cultures started produing coins at about the same time, with the earliest hollow-handle spade coins with characters being the earliest Chinese "coins." Money, however, was used far before that with the cowries. All those spades and knives are "coins" as well as being fake.
Sev-Alex ... were you able to figure-out what's on my 1st scarub example? (sometimes it's a bit of a mind-bender) ... back-to-back crocodiles
Oh wow, I didn't even notice the crocodiles! Way cool! Now I like both #1 and #2 a lot. What are the rough dates on those?
Thanks! I don't know much about scarabs, but that was my guess. There's a good series of novels to go with them: The Hippopotamus Marsh etc. by Pauline Gedge.
