I really encourage reading all the posted material by Valentinian (his site and mine were once a large part of what there was online on the subject). Pishpash also makes a good point. You need to learn to photograph or scan coins so you can illustrate your questions. It does not make a great deal of difference how you do it but the ability to produce sharp and clear images will make your experience on this list a great deal more valuable to you.
Another thing, before you even buy any coins make sure you talk to us first so that you don't get over-charged or run into some fakes. Don't worry about that too much just let us guide you about buying coins when you decide to.
Folks, I have to say I am very impressed with the help that you all give to everyone! Every time I have been on this forum, I get sincere and helpful information. I really appreciate it, and I am sure several others feel the same. This is exactly WHY I joined this forum site. Best to you all!
We all make some mistakes when we buy. It hurts some of us to see beginners making the same mistakes needlessly. One of the biggest mistakes we all have made is buying things we did not understand from people we should not have trusted. A mistake is not buying a coin that will be hard to sell for a profit in the future but buying a coin that will never be enjoyed now or later. My goal is for a crowd of today's young people (say, 10 to 40) to still be interested in this stuff in fifty years.
Not too many young people seem to be interested in collecting coins and especially Ancient coins. It's always refreshing to see new and young interest. I think you have to love history and art or art and history. Welcome Dilly.
Welcome Kylie minogue'fan. Hope you stick around and try your hand at collecting these little beauties.
