Well, this topic is a mixed bag anyway. ;) But yes, we now have a special Ancients forum. And ... happy birthday!

This one is my latest: not yet even in hand, just negotiated the purchase. Roman Empire, gold semissis, Julius Nepos. The next to last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, r. 474 - 475 AD. I'm going to forgo getting a Romulus Augustus for now. Rome was having severe stability problems at this point in time. I don't think even the barbarians bothered to strike copies of these, preferring copying the better known Emperors.
for those new to Rome: DN = Dominum Noster = "Our Lord", IVL = Julius, NEPOS = same, PF = Pius Felix, Dutiful and Fortunate, AVG = Augustus meaning Emperor
CONOB has some meaning with pure gold of Constantinople although this coin was not struck there

An old copper coin that I can't read and my guess it looks Roman? I had it for a long time and why not post it. After taking the picture I found this coin which was made in both bronze and silver. It looks like my coin.

Very nice Aegean stater. I've been looking for one of these much of my life but have always been outbid on them. This is one of the earliest silver coins made: at least the variety with the smooth shelled turtle.

The Sea turtle variety you speak of is also on my list but I need to save some $ to pick up a decent one of those, they tend to be somewhat more expensive

Since all of us are constantly purchasing new coins to add to our collections, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread that way. So, please post any recent or new acquisitions you may have made or are 'in the mail.' My example is a coin I found interesting and within my primary areas of interest---Early Roman or Greek (not to mention my monthly budget LOL).

Thrace, Byzantion. Circa 240-200 BC, AR Tetradrachm, 26mm,12.4 gm; Athanaion, Magistrate

Veiled and wreathed head of Demeter right
Poseidon seated right on rocks, holding trident and aphlaslton, monogram to left in exergue

Nice Mikey. I do not have any from Byzantion. Very nice portrait. But doesn't it look like Poiseidon is actually sitting on the "throne". Ah man, just give it a flush already, will ya?

I have nothing coming in the mail, but I do have some new coins I purchased a while back (March madness coins). I will post each in their own thread.

    Great coin, Mikey!

I may have something to post later tonight, if the gods of auction bidding smile upon me.
