Ancient Coins: Newest Acquisitions

Despite what the NGC label says, this coin commemorates the Roman poet Horace not the Egyptian god "Horus".

The satiny surfaces of the Italian commemorative issues of this era just call my name. It was hard for me to pass this one up, so I didn't.

Named for the daughter of Augustus, Colonia Iulia Augusta Felix Berytus was founded in 14 B.C. with veterans of the 5th and 8th legions. Herod the Great, Herod Agrippa I, and Herod Agrippa II built sumptuous monuments and sponsored gladiatorial combats at Berytos. After the siege of Jerusalem, Titus gave gladiatorial games at Berytos, in which the combatants were Jews.

It finally came in the mail!

My first EL stater.

I think it's pretty rare, too. I've been doing some digging and was only able to find one or two examples in that denomination. Plenty of hectes but I can't seem to find the dog and tunny on staters as easily as most other types I see from Mysia...

I wonder if this was made toward the end of the Ionian revolt?

Yeah...typically I don't double dip on threads per coin, but I like this one so much I thought I'd make an exception.

The electrum piece is polised but that's no surprise from back then and people don't seem to care. Easy to tell with a stereo microscope though (the dissecting kind). I could barely tell for sure with a loupe. I'm not sure if NGC cares about that; I still think the surfaces are wonderful, good stike (well-centered) and a mark on the dude's cheek on the reverse. Nothing THAT bad though. Maybe a good VF? For the price I payed, I think it's OUTSTANDING. Same price places usually sell the heavily worn 50% off-center ones ;3

I just liked the second piece so I got it. I haven't gotten many Italian pieces but that picture of the lion is just sooooo cute (it's also well-centered). The reverse is "meh" but I Think the double-strike is kinda cool, even in an ancient. Might be why the obverse stands out so well???

Should be getting a lot more hectes if the other auction house gets back to me :\ I'd think they would want to get paid (except these were all lowball bids so who knows if they care... I want them though, lol).

I'll call them if I'm awake in Switzerland time during the week but it make things tough. They said 14 days anyway and I emailed them at least 3 tmes.

I thought this was World/Ancient Coins: Your newest acquisitions... but I can start a new thread I guess. Just trying to be frugal and knew there was a diverse group active in this thread. Thanks I'll try it.

 

100% => until yesterday I would have agreed, but I don't know how cut-and-dry my cool ancient cohorts are gonna be now that there are two sites? (again, you're probably correct that somebody will answer your question) .... oh, and "beware" => for they get all twisted if you post the same question in more than one site (I'm just sayin')
