I saw an add in the paper, of all places, for an ancient Roman coin. The descrition is as follows; 2nd century silver denarius, Empereor Septimus Severus, 193-211 AD, exellent condition. Now assuming it is in readable condition, what do you think it may be worth. Thanks for any help.
there is no way of knowing until you know what coin it is...the values for Severus coins are all over the place though in general, many are still rather affordable. I would contact the person and find out what the reverse image and inscription is, what the obverse is and what general condition it is in. All of these are required before an estimate of worth could be nailed down.
again, no way of telling, plenty Severus denarius go for 50+...It would be foolish IMO to just buy it without knowing what it is.
I would definately get more info before buying. I may contact the seller to see if he can email some pics. I would like to buy a silver Roman at some point, but don't want to jump on the first thing that comes up. the book I am reading now called "Money a history" has really got me interested in getting a few more ancients. One of the next I want to hunt down is an ancient from India, possibly one of thier stamped coins. India has a pretty interesting evolution of thier coinage.
You should browse thru Vcoins to see what it's about for a Severus denarius. You'll make your idea of it and will be more confident when it comes to see this offer you're talkin' about Cucumbor
