Perhaps this has been done or is a thing? or been at least (I am sure ) discussed...??

But has there ever been any thought to a convention for the ancient collectors on Coin Talk?
Seems simple enough... pick a good coin show, book a block of rooms, give enough notice (like 6 months or something) and see who is interested??

Could rotate from NA, Europe, etc...

I actually organize these types of things all the time for hockey (I coach my kids).. so if we were to pick a good show - that is maybe a local show for one of our older, respected members that isn't interested in travelling...we block a bunch of rooms (no cost - they will hold them until maybe 2 weeks before the event.. then cancel at no charge if you can't make it).. they will throw in a free "common room" that we can use to meet and maybe have some discussion tables, displays. etc.

    Just an idea....

It would depend on the timing and whether or not I can get off from work.

I know a lot of people travel to the NYINC in January, but hotels in New York City are pretty expensive.

In NA, Toronto might be a good central location.

Ontario, Canada, seems a bit far awy for those of us living in the USA? As long as I have to travel internationally, I'd suggest Krakow, Poland. Actually Rome would be also be good.

I'd be interested in such an event as there are absolutely no decent coin clubs in my area.

Sounds really interesting @Clavdivs and I hope you can arrange something. I live on the west coast but occasionally travel to NYC on business so I might be able to attend.

The ANACS show in Philadelphia last summer was well attended, many ancient dealers. The Pennsylvania convention center is large, but easily subdivided for smaller/simultaneous shows, excellent public transit including close to 30th St Station (Amtrak, Septa's Suburban station, with connections to the airport, and NJ Transit). Center City overnight accommodations are lower than NYC (about 90 miles from Philly). Right now collectors in this area have the Baltimore show, the NYC show but nothing much except club shows in the area. With about 5 million in the Philly metro area there are a lot of collectors who would like something closer to home.

Although I'm in France it might be fun to join the party, depending of course on where (and flights rates at the time) and when (and how I can manage to have some days off work) it would take place

I would love to meet some/many of you in the real life

Well, let me suggest Indianapolis, Indiana or Cincinnati or Columbus or Dayton, Ohio. Conveniently between Chicago and New York, basically.

I recall the traveling shows that the ancients coin dealers used to have. They'd rent a room in a hotel and invite a bunch of us collectors to attend. Victor England, possibly Harlan Burk, and some others. Maybe we can coordinate with some of the ancient dealers, but I don't want to make this just a borse but an educational hobby event.

I'm in the South East so prefer the East Coast tho Mid West could also work.

Sounds like fun! We west-coasters would definitely prefer a midwest location to something way across the continent. :)

We could try to coordinate our activities with an existing show. One venue might be the Chicago ANA in August of this year. NYINC is good but weather is always an issue. I think it would be fun to visit with other like minded people and put a face to the posts.

I'll add Cleveland to the list, located even more directly between Chicago and New York.

I'm in Indy and accommodations are not expensive here, probably the same for Cleveland. I would help, if needed. I guess it also depends if the location is an easy, direct flight route for out-of towners.
I haven't been to a lot of shows so I don't know if it's done but it would be great if the educational parts of it could be live-streamed for out of towners.

Being in Minneapolis area, Chicago would work well for me, but I could probably easily make other cities like @Kasia mentioned (or Indy) work for me too.

I could help set the streaming up using webcam and tripod... We do a lot of remote conferencing at my institution. We could use Webex, Adobe Connect, or a good ol' Google Hangout.

What would be fun also is if a couple of members come with their camera set-ups and take pics of coins. Maybe people who want to have coin pics snapped provide the media holder for them (either sd card or thumb drive) and they get the images but have to deal with editing themselves. Maybe arrange a bit of a comp for the members who photo them. If someone wants to also 'professionally' photo some, then bring your info on that.

    Sounds like a great idea.

For Europe may I suggest Frankfurt, Germany in November. Timed to coincide with the Numismata, 2-day coin show with very many ancient coin dealers from all over Europe, in addition to all of the big german and some international auction firms.

The weather is also just great in Frankfurt in November ;).

It would be great to meet you ancient coin freaks in the flesh.

It is tough for me to find time to buy shoes, but if the timing and location line up I’ll be there.

Here's an idea. There is the
Indiana State Numismatic Association Coin Show being held this year in Evansville, Indiana at the Doubletree Hotel there. It is at the southern part of Indiana about half way (approx between St Louis and Louisville). This is the first time that coin show is going to be there in the past 50 years according to one of the sites listing coin shows. It is a 3 day show, Oct 3-5, so perhaps if everyone wanted to do a show this year in the mid-west, this is pretty 'central' for those who could drive, but I don't know the logistics for someone wanting to fly in there. I know it would be somewhat of a long drive for me, but still workable.

They are supposed to have over 100 tables there and as a 3 day show, we could perhaps pick one day to meet and convene. We would not have to pick the Doubletree.

What do you say, not saying we will choose to do this, but who here might be able to get away in Early October to this site? I think if we had enough people who could convene here it might be workable (looking for at least 10-15 people minimum I would think). Otherwise maybe set something up for next year.

Evansville is about 300 miles from Chicago or Memphis, 400 from Kansas City or Atlanta, 450 from Detroit, 500 from Pittsburgh, 550 from Charlotte just to give some major cities and the idea of location accessibility.

I like the idea of meeting people from this site. However, Evansville is really far for me (7 hour drive, Chicago is only 6 hours). Still, I might be up for an adventure in early October.
