Personally I would do off Ebay. If we go down the Ebay seller rathole, it will simply lead to disagreements.

Also, I think we should have comments, (that we generally agree with), for many of these dealers. Maybe specialty, comment on the size of the website or usefulness, etc. Steve Album is a specialist in Islamic and Indian coinage. CNG's site is extremely useful for research. VCoins is a huge portal of individual sellers, etc. I know many of these dealers listed personally, so I am trying to make my comments generic nand not specific recommendations.

Sounds good to me. I'll take any agreed upon Brief description. I can update the list to include these one I get the bulk of them. Can someone (like you) type up the basics, and we can revise if there is any disagreements?

My goal is for CT to have the best Ancients Dealer list available. And one that stay updated.

Med-man is probably correct about Ebay sellers. Perhaps we shouldn't list them unless they have a store elsewhere, i.e. DENANT.

I agree. I have a list of small-time eBay dealers I follow, but the quality of their inventory can vary wildly, and sometimes they offer counterfeit pieces, perhaps unknowingly. At any rate, you've got to have a practiced eye. The official list should probably only include well-established, reputable dealers.

Sounds good to me. I will remove the two ebay dealers I added, unless anyone knows of their direct stores.

This list has already gone down the rat hole if you count listing places that sell $20 coins for $200. There could be no general agreement on value of sources any more than there could be on where to buy shoes.

Some dealers charge more than others. If I come across a $20 coin that interests me, and it's listed for $200, I offer $20. If the answer is no, I move on. There will never be a substitute for educating yourself about the coins you like and their fair market values. If someone overpays for lack of savvy, well...chalk one up for P. T. Barnum.

Right, but much like my list of US Coin Dealers, I have over 200, and I personally have only used maybe 20. A lot are probably crappy dealers, but I wanted to get as many good links as possible incase some of the lesser dealers may have something that someone needed.

Now, with ancients, yall are a smaller, tighter community (an outsider's perspective).

If we only want to include agreed upon respected, trusted, vetted, dealers sites, we can do that. If some bad-seeds have made it into my list and they should be removed, just PM me. We can do it nice and quiet.

My goal was to make a list that did not seem to exist on CT at all, and to be better than other lists I have come across that are 50% dead links.

I think this can be accomplished, but maybe the list will be very small. I need the help from the old-guard (you guys), but this list will obviously be used primarily my new collectors, and single-source collectors who want to branch out.

Your work is very much appreciated Geek. I would like to have such a list in one place myself.

Eventually, I will get into ancients. Of the few hundred I have looked at, the Owl motif is what I really like best. (Is that super cliche?) I want to get this list tweaked so when the time comes, I can use my own list to start hunting for the correct OWL (yes, in plastic).

So, there is some self-interest at work here.

Yes. But they're popular for a reason. It's one of the most beautiful designs on ancient coins. The only reason I haven't collected one is precisely because they're so popular and therefore expensive, but perhaps I should set that aside. Someday I'll own one as well.

Can we add an auction house that is primarily ancients? I have nothing but good things to say about Agora Auctions and firmly believe they deserve to be on the list. Triskeles Auction is also awesome in my opinion but their last two auctions have been facilitated through vauctions so I don't know if they are going to continue that route or host a couple more auctions on their homepage.

I can add two Canadian dealers to the list I haven't dealt with directly as of yet but have excellent things about both:
    Praefectus Coins
    Ancient Coins Canada

I had a good experience with York Coins as well even though he had to refund my purchase on his end. He had excellent customer services though and explained thoroughly the reason why he had to refund the purchase. He mainly has English coins but also has a great selection of ancients.

I disagree. Simply search both for whatever you want and pick the best option. I think more often it will be vcoins.

I have a web page with links to internet dealers who are not just eBay sellers. I did not list dealers on vcoins, rather those with personal web sites. The top also has links to a few major dealers and sites. The further down the page you go, the more minor the source.

They must have grown in the last few years...

I remember not being able to find a singe turtle under 500 USD on vCoins.

MA seems to have less inventory than I remember, as well.

    Hey, look at that!

He should probably take that down, seeing how I own it :p

I got it off eBay, a few weeks ago. Best offer accepted.

I'll probably go through his store the next time. Maybe get a slightly better deal.

Also keep in mind that many if not most sellers that have an MA-Shops/Münzauktion presence are in Europe. So if you want to make a list of dealers in the US, the sites may not be that useful ...
