On this sale, I got to work on the early electrum coinage from the Koppersmith Collection. It was probably one of the most enjoyable and intellectually stimulating groups I have ever cataloged. Usually, I'm the one stuck plowing through rows of identical, shimmering Byzantine solidi.

    Thanks for posting this.

I managed to miss the electrum coinage online due to a website error earlier and would have missed it had you not posted it.

OK, a few final items before everything is finalized and the fantasy game is started.

    (1) Should we add the Kunker auction? I support doing this.
    (2) Should we raise the fantasy bankroll to, say, $200K rather than $100K due to the high-priced nature of the auctions?

    Please respond with your preferences.

By the way, I've added a few more items to the game structure to cover some possible but unlikely occurrences:

    1. - If a coin is withdrawn prior to the start of an auction, the participant can reuse the funds allocated for that coin in a different auction.

    2. - If a coin fails to sell (but isn’t withdrawn), the coin is deemed sold at its minimum opening bid as listed on the auction site, or 80% of the estimate if there is no minimum opening bid posted.

    3. - If two participants bid on the same coin and both bids win, then each participant is deemed to have won the coin at the price he/she bid. This is a fantasy auction, not a real one!

    1) spoilt-ballot => I've never heard of it (but it's fine with me)
    2) yes => it's merely monopoly money (everybody starts with the same stash)

To be honest, many of the auctions mentioned (Kunker being just one) are not on my periscope. I know the coins offered are out of my budget to say the least. The only reason I mention this is because I may need assistance in finding the particular auction sites on line. Also, does one have to sign up on these sites in order to view the auction material?

Agreed on all three questions above.

Most of these sales haven't been posted yet, but you should be able to view all of them through www.sixbid.com. I think the fact that they're out of most people's budgets is part of the fun - you can "bid" after researching as if you were actually looking to acquire the coins.

Ok I guess I am a sower sport but this seems somewhat complicated.
You have to be a high budget guy to generally be familiar with all these Mutzelwaddenspendingmonetalikewhao Coin auction houses. Most here are bottom feeders and have no idea what these things cost, and are not routinely signed up with anything like, this. Maybe I got this wrong, but I am not sure how much fun this could be...what we need is a good theme and post against (steve?). I will easgerly watch this and see how this plays out.o_O

A-Noob => I'm thinking that this contest/game could be fun enough ... it should be quite interesting/educational to check-out these ritzy auctions (I never find it a chore to check-out cool ancient coins) ...

ummm, as long as we're only using "imaginary funds" ... we are using imaginary funds, aren't we? (yah, although I fool myself into thinking that I wear the pants in the family, I'm fairly sure that my wife would put a quick stop to my entry if we were using our actual retirement fund!!)

Oh, is there any chance that we could be informed/warned when the auction dates are upon us?

NOTE => there are zero entry fees and zero prizes for the winner, correct? (well, other than a few braggin' rights?)

It's not as complicated as it seems -- the goal is to see if you can spend fantasy funds to win coins that you'd like to have in your collection. The detailed structure and rules are mostly to deal with mundane issues of how administer the game.

I'm pretty sure you'll find it fun and enjoyable once you spend a little time looking through the auction catalogs. All of these auctions are listed on www.sixbid.com about 4 - 6 weeks prior to the actual auction date, and include online catalogs. You really don't need to be a "high budget guy" to have fun - we all have fantasies about coins we'd like to buy if we had the funds.

There is a lot of historical pricing data available at www.acsearch.info.

Since this is the first incarnation of this game, my goal is to have fun and learn ways to improve it. No prizes for now.

I'll try to post information to the official thread when an upcoming auction is listed on www.sixbid.com, and also when the "prices realized" are posted a few days after the auction.

Umm, I noticed that you've posted the "Official" thread ... I "almost" asked the following questions on that thread, but caught myself at the last second and decided to use this thread instead (I'm assuming that your "official" thread is "only" for game bids ... correct?) ... all other comments should be asked through this thread and/or through PM"s etc ... right?

Additional question => "The Windchild Clause" => ummm, so is there a "minimum number of coins" that must be bid upon, or can we bid it all on "1 coin" or bid it on an infinite numbers of coins?

I won't be playing but I want to watch. Is there a way I can subscribe to the official thread without posting in it or perhaps it will be OK for me to just make a brief post?

Each participant can bid on as few as just one coin, or as many as he/she likes.

It's my guess that bidding on fewer, higher-priced coins will have a higher risk/reward ratio (i.e., higher variance if you're a mathematician) while bidding on larger numbers of moderate-to-low-priced coins will have more successes but possibly result in a lower AES due to the number of bids that are not successful or are overbid. But until the auction season ends, this is just a guess.

It's fine to post occasionally to the official thread, and you might find that after the first one or two auctions, you'd like to join the game for the remaining auctions.

Curious, Collect89? ... if it doesn't actually cost you anything to enter, why wouldn't you gamble and take a swing? (why wouldn't we "all" jump-in and take a chance?)

.... ummm, because everybody on this site is well aware of my frivalous reputation => so, the chances are extremely high that I'll blast out of the blocks and end-up blowing my budget early and therefore I'll probably end-up finishing dead last!! ... and hey, I'm okay with that ...

    ... anyway ...

=> dude, the more the merrier and I hope that you decide to toss your helmet into the ring!! (or into the colosseum, I guess?)

    :)

One more question. Do we sign up on the official thread as participating?

Collect89: Aw c'mon. It should be fun.

Ok, I am going to move this thread to CONTESTS where it belongs whether it is mainly ancient coins or such.

And I am sorry, but I find the requirement about having to use an offsite " sixbid" to fully participate to be against the rules stated in the 2 stickies in the contest section. I also see no mention of a numismatic prize, so all I see ( other than bragging rights) is a mechanism to direct members to auction sites supported by "sixbid" ( spam). I am going to close the thread. I will present this to the administrative staff and see if they disagree, which then they can reopen it. Sorry.
