I found it kind of (very) interesting that probably 90% of my animal-coins came from the Greek-side of my collection ...... other than the eagles, suckling wolves and chariot-horses, the Romans didn't really embrace the ol animal-coins as much as the Greeks ... => both Roman-coins and Greek-coins are awesome, but the Greeks really did "bring-it" where the animals were concerned!! (well, Gallienus excluded!!) Man => top of my want-list is to collect all of his sweet zoo-series!!
Absolutely fantastic Posts!!!! Hmmm, Does it seem that TIF and Steve have TOO MANY coins and need to clear their 'inventory' for NEW coins??? Well, I'll reluctantly volunteer to take a few off your hands---maybe force myself to accept dozens
This thread has really shown me that I'm in dire need of more animal coins. ANTONINUS PIUS AE As 9.31g, 27mm Rome mint, AD 140-143 RIC 734a O: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR P COS III, laureate head right. R: IMPERATOR II, She-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus; boat in exergue, between S C.
All I had was eagle, snake, and horse. Well I've got a bee coming... Haha. Becoming - bee coming! Think the pain meds are working
Its been a great run of animal coins and things..Most of my coins came from Gallienus animal series, few more on the look out for..its been fun.. Thank you TIF for hosting this great thread!!! My last coin will be a She Wolf!!
Okay, I have two lowly examples of a she-wolf (and not enough time to try for decent photos, so pleas forgive me)
That's about it for me. Nice thread TIF. There have been a lot of nice coins posted here. Thanks! WOLVES Two wolf and twins and a scuzzy old Trajan.
Thanks again, TIF ... => not only was that a great chance for me to show-off a few of my coins, but it was even more valuable for me as a list of animals that are "out-there-and- available" (oh, and that you dawgs already own!!) Absolutely fantastic thread and amazing coins from you and from the rest of our Uber-cool CoinTalk gang!! => you rock, Princess (and I personally think you had most of the sweetest animal-coins) ... man, we really do like the same type-o-stuff, eh? Cheers Ummm, oh and just because I like to strut my OCD, I have high-lighted the animals in your A-to-R list that I was able to tick-off (again, I thought this was an extremely cool thread and even more useful in my "hunt to capture all of the animal-coins") Antelope Aquila/eagle Ass Bear Bee Bird Bison Boar Bull Butterfly Camel Capricorn Chimera Centaur Cobra/Uraeus Cockle/Clam Cow Crab Crayfish Crocodile Crow Doe/Deer Dog Dolphin Dove Dragon (non-ancient) Eagle Elephant Fish Fly Fox Frog (non-ancient) Goat Goose Grasshopper Griffin/gryphon Hare Heron Hawk Hippo Hippocamp Horse Hound Ibis Impala Insect (nonspecific) Ketos Jackal-headed god (Hermanubis) Jerboa (maybe ) Lion Lizard Monkey Mule Murex sea snail Octopus Ostrich Owl Oxen Panther Peacock Pegasus Phoenix Pig Ram Rat Raven Rhino Rooster => thanks for helping me out, my wonderful coin-friend Ummm, I wasn't exactly sure which one of these two captured my thanks ... so I posted 'em both!! ... errrr, and because we're all Nerds, hopefully we all noticed that it should have been you're awesome (gawd, sometime I hate being an OCD-nerd!!)
Great job, everyone! Tomorrow I'll sum it up and fill in some missing letters. Meanwhile, some attributions of the Septimius Severus "Circus" denarius indicate a zebra. I think I'll revise the description on my Circus denarius. Here's the same type from CNG's archives, with their descriptions. I've seen the animals called various things and have no idea how the animals can be determined with any certainty. I'm going to go with zebra instead of lioness for my coin because I want to post a Z animal . CNG's: Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. AR Denarius (3.80 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 202. Laureate head right / Ship with mast and sail in center of circus; above, four quadrigae driven left; below, ostrich, lion, zebra, bear and stag right, bull butting left, bear right, head left. RIC 274; RSC 253 Mine: Some of you have another Z animal... a zebu (hump-backed cattle) depicted on certain Bactrian coins and a few others. Let's see them!
