I have been waiting patiently for @stevex6 to post one of his animal creatures with a beard or facial hair. Here is a coin of Characene depicting some groovy locks: Kingdom of Characene (Tigris Valley - Kuwait) Attambelos I AR Tetradrachm 44 - 39 B.C. 12.39 gms, 27.1 mm Obv: Diademed bearded head right Rev: Naked Hercules seated left on stone (possibly an Omphalos stone) club resting on knee held with right hand. Monogram above right arm. BAΣΙΛ[?] / ATTAMB[?] to right, [Σ]ΩTHP[?] to left. Grade: gVF with sharp strike on good silver fabric. Coin is nicely centered with attractive toning. Some letters off the flan as noted with only rough planchet surface in exergue.
Not Steve, but how about: GELA, SICILY AR Litra OBV: Naked horseman galloping left holding spear & shield REV: Forepart of man-headed bull right Struck at Gela, Sicily, 425BC 0.36g; 13mm SNG Cop 275, BMC 52, Jenkins 405; HGC 2 374
Hey, I realize that I recently posted this sweet coin on the Macrinus-thread, but I figured that I'd better give Big-Mac his time to shine in the sun on this "facial-hair-thread" ... => yup, he has a pretty sweetly groomed tidy-beard goin' on, eh? => lookin' good, Big-Mac!!
That IS a great beard @stevex6 ! I really like how he keeps the hair nice and short but sports the grizzly beard as a fashion choice. If you have a grizzly beard and equally grizzly hair... you just don't care and have let yourself go. But if you have a grizzly beard and a nice haircut... your styling!
I loved all your barbs! However back to coins....they are all great, sep. the Parthian King with his French poodle style/WOW! Here to show that modern day rulers also could grow a good beard....here is th "hillbilly" Herzog of Saxe-Meiningen 1914-D AV 20 Marks, one of my better Reich Gold munzen.
Super posts everyone!! Since so many examples have already been posted, I'll throw in a recent win of Mac and son...sort of an inexpensive portrait gallery from Moesia Inferior of a 'short-beard' version of Macrinus and hairless Diadumenian.
Did you know Titus and Domitian were depicted with beards on their denarii? => ummm, is a horny-beard cool enough?l!! ... fine, I'll look around for some animal beards (umm, but you guys know that my wife is calling me upstairs, right?) ... I have a very small "target-zone" where I get to coin (I am jealous of you dudes that get to spend all day coining)
Not ancient by any stretch but a very cool coin indeed: *Not mine When Tzar Peter the Great wanted to modernize Russia to make it more like Europe, one of the things he did was order his subjects to cut their beards. If you wanted to keep a beard, you had to pay a tax. This coin was proof you paid the beard tax, so whenever the state Beard Police rounded you as part of a raid on the War on Beards and threatened to force-shave you, you could present this coin and keep your beard. The inscription says "The beard is a superfluous burden"
Ha, yeah good eye! I really love it. Sometimes you get lucky I guess (I've been equally coin unlucky too so keeping the balance). How could a quality mustache like that go so unnoticed?
beware, i guess not with this specific coin, but in general, I bought form the same seller Aelius tetradrachm, turned out to be fake coin
