Yup, I scored myself a sweet "ant-coin" which is also a PB Tessera (I'm pretty sure that scores me two cool points?!!) I noticed that my sweet coin-girl-friend also nabbed herself a great Pb Tessera today (congrats again, Pish => you rock!!) Yah, I didn't have an "ant" in my animal collection so it was a no-brainer => I was gunnin' for this cool insect!! ASIA MINOR, Uncertain (Ionia?). PB Tessera 1st-3rd centuries AD Diameter: 14 mm Weight: 3.07 grams Obverse: Ant, ΓA IOV around Reverse: Blank Reference: Gülbay & Kireç
Oh, and as always => "please" post your ant coins, your tessera coins, your Ionia coins and all of your cool coins with whatevers on 'em
When I was a kid I was fascinated by ants. To my mom's dismay almost every summer I tried to keep an ant farm going in those large pickle jars. Needless to say when she came across one house cleaning, out it went! What a neat piece Steve, just wish I was aware of them when I was 13.
Not into tersserae but a most interesting design for sure Steve. I've seen bees but never an ant. Nice Ant-Man reference btw. Reminds me I still need to go and see Civil War
Nice insect, Steve.. It's renowned for wisdom and perseverance. Here's an insect of mine on obverse. I got it very recently. I think it's a bee, but one can never tell for sure since that was thousands of years ago. Maybe they were a little bit different in shape.
Ummm, here is my only other Pb Tessera ... which is also pretty fricken cool EGYPT, Uncertain, PB Tessera 2nd-3rd centuries AD Diameter: 15 mm Weight: 4.82 grams Obverse: Head of Serapis right, wearing calathus; uncertain object before Reverse: Griffin seated right, resting right paw on wheel Reference: Milne –; Dattari (Savio) –; Köln Other: 5h … Good Fine … even gray patina with a spot of green, minor surface cracking
I know the word tessera in mosaic. But what does it mean exactly in ancient coins. I would try to search or ask for them if I can.
From forvmancientcoins "Tessera Tesserae are ancient tokens. Most were made from lead, but bronze and other materials were also used. They were used as tickets for theaters, gladiator fights, ferry passage and even brothels. Some were given as gifts by a King, the Roman emperor or a local government, perhaps to the poor as vouchers to exchange for food."
I have a Chinese Cast ZHOU Dynasty, 1122-255 BCE, yi bi, Tang Go Liu Zhu "ant" coin, lead, 19x12mm, 3.7g... ordered and en route, but have no pics of it yet!
Awesome score, coinbro!! Love love love your new ant tessera, although I'm not particularly happy with the Formicidae family right now. The whole story would be TMI so let's just say unseen squished tiny gecko under commode seat, unseen swarm of tiny ants feasting on dead gecko, me sitting... I have no ant coins but can contribute two tessera, one lead and one bronze. Hadrian's boy toy, Antinous: EGYPT, Antinoöpolis. Cool Coins all !! LOVE the Ant tessera @stevex6 !!! I can't help but wonder what that specific tessera was used for---a token for Roman Exterminator Services??? Three tessera saved after previously paid services and the rat poison is free??
