[QUOTE="GDJMSP, post: 51990, member: 112"]Well - I hate to say it but it just might depend on how the grader feels that day. It is a subjective call - there are no hard and fast rules. Bottom line is - if they feel the coin has been over-dipped they will label it cleaned. Recognizing a dipped coin is something that just comes with experience. It's kind of hard to explain - but easy to show someone when you have coins in your hand and can compare them. An over-dipped coin on the other hand is easy to recognize. They will appear a dull washed out grey or silver color if the coin is silver. If it's copper - it will appear lifeless & flat - the light won't play around the coin in either case. And keep in mind - many of the greatest numismatists and dealers will dip a coin in a heartbeat. They see nothing wrong with it at all. And if it is done properly - it can be quite beneficial to them monetarily. Say you have coin with original surfaces ( never been dipped ) but the coin is toned - the greyish toning that all silver gets over time. You send the coin in for grading to NGC or PCGS and it comes back MS64. Now you crack that coin out and dip it - correctly. And what appears before your eyes is a coin with blazing luster and is blast white. You send the same coin in again for grading. Only this time it comes back MS67. Puts a few more coins in your pocket wouldn't ya say ? One thing you cal always consider though - if you're looking at a coin that is say over 50 yrs old - and it's blast white. The odds are very, very strong that the coin has been dipped. Silver WILL tone and turn grey with time. It is simply inevitable unless the coin stored under perfect conditions for its entire life.
