By the way, the ANA is not affiliated with ANACS...Their official grading service is NGC. IF you join the ANA you can submit coins to NGC without joining NGC. Their monthly magazine "The Numismatist" is a great monthly read...you also have access to older copies dating back to the thirties if you use the free online access included in your membership...only about $2.00/month! I joined their "Platinum" membership for $41.00/yr. because I like the magazine delivered by mail...it's $46.00/yr. for ages 18-64 if you want the delivery service. Kids can join for $14.oo/yr for digital service. If you're not an NGC member, the savings is $39.00/yr just for NGC grading alone...well worth belonging to the ANA.
Well spoken Mike. I'm a life member, joined in 86'. I've been to conventions since 1992. Summer Seminar is a most excellent experience, I'll be going back again this Summer. While I do a lot of coin photography, I'll be taking the intermediate course from Doug Mudd (ANA Museum Manager), and Rob Kelley (ANA photographer). I have been an instructor at Summer Seminar. All that being said, the most important items I have collected are the people I have met; new, seasoned, and oldsters that I have the pleasure of calling my friends. The more you contribute to the hobby, the more you get back in return in spades. The support our coin club has received from ANA has been indescribable. As a club we have sponsored together with another regional club four National Money Shows, and one Worlds Fair of Money. Our local club members have been recipients of some priceless opportunities over the years. The camaraderie is palpable. For the most part numismatics is a solitary hobby. The only time we meet others are at local, and regional shows. The ANA conventions are just on larger scale. The exposure to things other than one collects helps round one out and expose one to so many numismatic adventures. Taste and see. By all means, join the ANA. Whether you select the on line plan for The Numismatist, or the hold in your hand version you cannot find a better subscription value together with a lot of history and numismatic information. Also, find an join a local club to join as well. Worlds of numismatics will open up for you whether you collect US, foreign, ancients, tokens or gambling chips. All are welcome. Regarding scandals and such, it eventually catches up with miscreants. The heart and soul of the hobby is present at the ANA, there are a lot of people there who work very hard to make sure the hobby is enjoyed by all.
As mlov43 pointed out above, the ANA is a hobby organization and the others are not.The others (NGC, PCGS, ANAC, ICG,...) are grading services. They do not pay authors for articles in their magazines which they send out to their members. The grading services do not lend books from their huge libraries. And so on. The ANA was founded in 1891, and chartered by Congress in 1912. In 1962 the charter was made permanent.
Those average, but fascinating collections are possible and I encourage you to write about it and submit your article to the ANA. You will be paid well. You do a lot of writing here. Just organize your thoughts into 2000 words.
Imagine that. Obtaining information prior to. What a concept. Perhaps what the hobby needs is an application process of some sort to help group those that enjoy hobnobbing with those of predetermined wealth levels versus those that simply want information without the snobbery. That would better allocate groups of people who would enjoy each other's company without having to mingle with folks they share little with. Just a thought. Maybe a 'poor mans' section to group similar tastes. That way everybody's happy and can exchange information without the worry of measuring up to other people's standards. Rich with rich, worker with worker down to the very poor. That way, everybody can speak each other's language without worrying about being frowned upon or censored. Just a thought.
