You won't see one of those in a genuine slab. (Except in an "educational" ICG slab) Those were produced 50 to 60 years ago and have been recognized as fakes for that long. LONG before the TPG's came along so they already know about it and it wouldn't get past them.

One of the things I always do in researching one of these is try to attribute and then compare it to known genuine examples.

    Found that this is from a 1799 B-16 BB-158:

I can now better focus on trying to find others:D...

Jack, any idea of the number of these counterfeit 1799 Bust dollars exist?

I don't @schnickelfritz48 but it appears ANACS saw 2 and this example appears to be different; still researching!

Update- I asked the seller if it had been sent to a TPG for authentication and received the following response:

"Hi Jack, I sold the dollar to another coin dealer. Thanks and hoping to have some others. Couldn't like I said accepted the offer anyway."

    To be continued:D...

We saw at least a dozen while I was there, probably more.

Which tells me she knew it was fake all along. "Hoping to have some others"? Other fakes? So she knowingly sold it to another dealer knowing it was fake...I'd avoid this dealer like the plague. Her last sentence makes no sense.

I just wanted to add, the 1799 fake is also thick and heavier than the original. I have a fake for show-n-tell only. I call it my "China-go-Round." Great information, thanks for the post.

Unfortunately Jack, the coin is currently out on loan to a law enforcement agency, sorry. If the topic comes up again I will post the coin. Be safe

A great use of the "coin" @Mr.Q ! I have had the opportunity to discuss the latest counterfeits in meetings with Secret Service, CBP, the Treasury, and Staffers of the Senate Finance Committee (in DC); I believe education is the best defense!
Would love to see yours should you have it back in the future!

The question is was it sold as a fake, and did the dealer buy it as a fake?

Looks like they changed their mind? Interesting. Maybe somebody gave them a call. Hope the seller does the right thing. Thanks for an informative thread!
