I am very glad that American Airlines now has internet access on flights. This was a very interesting escape from reality on an otherwise very boring 8-hour flight. I'd love to contribute some feedback to this thread but I simply cannot. It is too far out of the realm of logic to do so.
Here's an idea that might work: "Coin appraisal" is a fairly heavily searched term on Google, with a monthly search volume of 1,900. Other related terms have traffic in the 100's, though there is a fair level of competition. What you could do is set up a professional-looking website and offer free coin appraisals. And instead of requiring people to send in their coins, just ask for pictures (or even descriptions, for those who don't know how to upload photos). Obviously your appraisals won't be very precise, so you should try to target people who know little about coins and are unwilling to pay for a professional appraisal. Maybe they just inherited a few old coins from grandpa and want to see if they struck it rich, or they came across a strange-looking dime in their change—those sorts of people. Start writing articles on the values of Morgan dollars, Washington quarters, etc, so you capture some additional web traffic from people searching for those values. Once you manage to get a decent stream of traffic, set up an Google Adsense or Amazon Affiliate account and start generating some revenue. I think with this method you would have a much greater chance of actually making some money.
