Speaking for myself, I clearly understand the difference. I knew NGC did not guarantee authenticity. The source of my confusion is that I also did not think NGC intended to render an authenticity opinion by slabbing a coin. I didn't think their service covered authentication beyond refusing to holder obvious fakes. So, Barry's explanation has been eye-opening.
Not intentionally! Corrected. If I meant to be funny I would have also included "holster" instead of holder.
When I purchase a coin that has been slabbed by NGC or one that comes with a Sear certificate, I always feel more confident in it's authenticity than I would otherwise. On the other hand, I wouldn't dream of buying a coin that either service has condemned and I think 99.9999% of collectors would agree. Barry, I appreciate you weighing in on this and I'm not looking to get something for nothing but, from what you see, do you think it's worthwhile sending this coin to you for a second opinion?
I've always understood NGC's service as @Barry Murphy has described it. Which is why I don't mind their service or owning 50+ NGC slabs. Speaking of which; @Barry Murphy are you guys hiring? I have young eyes and hear Sarasota is lovely. Michael
Nemo, While I would be happy to look at your coin in the flesh, based on the photo I suspect my opinion will be the same as David Sears on this coin. But if you want a written second opinion feel free to send it in. Barry
